Return to Shiganshina Arc - Attack on Titan
The Return to Shiganshina is the seventh story arc of the Attack on Titan series created, written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama. In the manga, the Return to Shiganshina Arc includes from Chapter 71 to Chapter 90. As for its TV anime series counterpart, it includes Episode 49 to Episode 59. This Arc follows the The Uprising Arc in the story line.
The Return to Shiganshina arc starts in the city where everything began, where the enemies of humanity the Titans first appeared and where the inhabitants of the Walls received a sad reminder about the destructive power of the Titans. Under the command of Erwin Smith, the Survey Corps plan to launch a counterattack.
Summary
Two months after the rise of Historia Reiss to the throne, the Survey Corps begins its move to recover Wall Maria in the Shiganshina District and find the truth about the world that lies hidden in the former home of Eren Jaeger. However, the soldiers are completely oblivious to the fact that the enemies have prepared an ambush there.
After leaving Trost District in the morning and traveling through the Titans’ territory for a whole night, the Survey Corps manages to reach Shiganshina in the early morning. Once there the mission of sealing the breaches in Wall Maria begins, carried out by Eren. The block of the aperture made by the Colossal Titan is a success and consequently the sealing of the hole opened by the Armored Titan is also carried out. Things get complicated when Reiner Braun is discovered by a soldier inside the Wall. Although Levi tries to kill him, he fails and Reiner ends up transforming into a Titan. In response, Eren does the same and both begin a battle inside the district, which ends with the dejection of the Armored Titan thanks to a new weapon developed by Hange Zoë, the lightning spear.
On the other hand, Zeke Jaeger becomes the Beast Titan and transforms several people into Titans. With the help of the Cart Titan, he blocks the escape routes of the Survey Corps by separating soldiers from their horses, and then initiating his own attack by throwing stones into the district, killing several soldiers. After hearing the roar of help of the Armored Titan from Shiganshina, Zeke takes a barrel that contains Bertolt Hoover and throws it to Reiner’s location. Bertolt falls into that place and after being confronted by his former teammates, he transforms into the Colossal Titan generating an explosion and destroying everything around him.
The Beast Titan is defeated by Levi Ackerman in a suicide plan ordered by Erwin Smith, in which the remaining soldiers die. Simultaneously, Bertolt, in this Titan form, is confronted by Eren with the help of Armin, who was fatally burned when acting as a distractor, and Reiner falls once more for a joint attack by Hange and Mikasa Ackerman. Although Levi had initially decided to use the serum of Titan that he had in Erwin, he finally chose to use it on Armin, who transformed into a Titan, devours Bertolt and acquires the power of the Colossal Titan, thus saving himself from death. After the escape of the remaining enemies, Eren along with Mikasa, Hange and Levi arrive at the ruins of his old house. Once there, they enter the basement, where they discover everything about Grisha Jaeger’s mysterious past and the true origins of the Titans.
