OtapediaList of Titans - Attack on Titan

In the Attack on Titan manga series written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama, there are many kinds of Titans, which all have a vaguely humanoid form. Most of them are called “Pure Titans”, which are mindless and seek to devour humans without being fully aware of their actions. However, there are also humans known as Titan shifters. These people have the ability to transform into a special kind of Titans collectively known as the “Nine Titans”.

The Nine Titan powers have been passed down through the Eldian people for nearly 2,000 years after Ymir Fritz’s death. This power is often transferred whenever a Titan shifter is eaten by another Titan. If a Titan shifter eats another Titan shifter, the two powers merge into one, decreasing the overall number of the Nine Titans.

History

Over 1,700 years ago, Eldia went through a series of civil conflicts that often involved the Titans to some degree. These events would eventually lead to what would be known as the Great Titan War. Many centuries later, when Eldia’s 145th King, Karl Fritz, inherited the power of the Founding Titan, he felt ashamed of the actions of his people. He secretly collaborated with the Tybur family to intensify the Eldian civil conflict and cause the slow self-destruction of Eldia, giving Marley the opportunity to attack Eldia in a weakened state.

As such, Marley took six of the nine Titan powers and used them for military purposes for over a century. Upon exile on Paradis Island, Karl used the power of the Founding Titan to control numerous Titans and, with its hardening power, created three huge walls to enclose himself and those who followed him after leaving the continent. After that, Karl used his power once again to erase the memories of the Eldians of Paradis, with the exception of a select few who, for various reasons, were immune to the effects of this ability. From then on, the Founding Titan remained in the hands of Karl’s descendants, who would later be known as the Reiss family.

Types of Titans

  • The Attack Titan: His current inheritor is Eren Jaeger. His father Grisha passed it on to him. Before Eren’s father, it was held by Eren Krueger, also known as the Owl. This Titan has great strength and athletic ability. It also has the unique ability to see the memories of the previous and future inheritors of the power, essentially allowing its current user to see both the past and the future.

  • The Founding Titan: It is also currently inherited by Eren Jaeger and given to him by his father when he passed on the power of the Attack Titan. Before that, the Founding Titan was controlled by Frida Reiss. If it is in the possession of a person of royal blood, its user has the ability to alter the memories of the Eldian people and control the mindless Titans’ actions. A member of the royal bloodline can also see the memories of the first king, making it a source of the true history of the Eldian people as well. If someone without royal blood inherits its power, they can only control the mindless Titans. Despite this, however, Eren can still see some fragments of the memories of the previous holders.

  • The War Hammer Titan: This power was recently acquired by Eren Jaeger from its former inheritor, the sister of Willy Tybur. It has the ability to produce weapons like spears to use in battle. In addition, the user can control the Titan remotely via a cable made of flesh. While this ability is active, the user is encased within a hardened shell for protection.

  • The Colossus Titan: It was previously held by Bertholt Hoover, but is currently possessed by Armin Arlert. It is a very large Titan that towers above all others at a massive 60 meters tall and has a comparable amount of strength as well. Another unique ability of this Titan is its ability to control the steam it produces to a much finer degree than the other Titans. This ability can be controlled the moment its user transforms and even after the transformation.

  • The Armored Titan: Its current inheritor is Reiner Braun. It is covered by extremely hard armor, though some areas are left exposed to enable mobility. It can also use brain transference, allowing its user to transfer their brain functions to the rest of their body in case of a catastrophic brain injury.

  • The Female Titan: Its current inheritor is Annie Leonhart. It has a high amount of stamina and considerable athletic ability. It can also emit a scream that will attract mindless Titans towards it. The Female Titan can also produce areas of hardened, crystal-like armor to protect itself from attacks. It is unclear if this Titan is always female in appearance, or if it changes sex depending on the holder.

  • The Jaw Titan: It is currently held by Falco Grice. Previous inheritors of this power include Ymir, Marcel Gillard, and Porco Gillard. As its name implies, this Titan has incredible biting strength. Apart from its massive jaws, it is quite small, allowing it to move very easily. Its small size gives it a great advantage in smaller battlefields with plenty of obstacles, as larger Titans would be hindered by their own size.

  • The Cart Titan: The current inheritor of this Titan power is Pieck. It has the ability to walk on all four limbs. It is quite small, but it has great strength. It is usually used to carry weapons and other cargo. It can move very quickly and is capable of speech. The user of this Titan can also stay transformed for very long periods of time.

  • The Beast Titan: This power is currently inherited by Zeke Jaeger, who took it from Tom Xaver. It looks like an ape and it is the only Titan that has fur and a more animal-like appearance. It has the ability of transforming Eldians into Pure Titans, as long as they have been injected with the spinal fluid of the Beast Titan. These transformations can be triggered with a scream created by the Beast Titan. These new mindless Titans obey the Beast Titan’s orders. This Titan can also throw objects with incredible force and accuracy.
