About Wakatoshi Ushijima

Wakatoshi Ushijima is a third year at Shiratorizawa Academy and is the volleyball team's ace and captain. He is ranked third in Japan among high school aces. His physical strength, height, and left-handedness make him an almost unbeatable opponent in high school volleyball.

About Wakatoshi Ushijima: Background

Ushijima has a very stoic, blunt personality. He doesn't speak much or express many emotions, preferring to stay focused and let his actions speak for him. Ushijima's most defining characteristic is his deep-rooted confidence in his skills and the strength of his team. As a result, he tends to look down on other players and unknown schools. His blunt nature also causes him to make unintentionally offensive or provocative comments.

Ushijima grew up in the traditional Ushijima family household. His father was a second division professional volleyball player who retired after getting injured. His mother and grandmother wanted to correct Ushijima's left-handedness. However, his father argued for him to keep it, believing it could be an advantage to him in the future. His parents divorced but Ushijima continued to play volleyball to become the type of player and ace his father described.

About Wakatoshi Ushijima: Abilities

As the third best ace in the country, Ushijima possesses considerable volleyball skills overall. His hitting power is among the top in Japan. Due to his left-handedness, his spikes and serves have a different spin than more common right-handed ones. This makes them more difficult to receive for opponents that haven't trained much with left-handed players.

Due to Shiratorizawa's play style and his offensive skills, Ushijima rarely participates in defensive plays. As a result, his receiving skills are less developed than his attacking technique. However, the power and height behind his spikes allow him to blast through or go over most three-person blocks. Therefore, Ushijima feels comfortable leaving defensive plays to his teammates as he believes he will score no matter what.

As a high-powered ace, Ushijima serves as a rival for many of the series' central figures. His new, one-sided rivalry with Hinata drives his arc over the series' third season. However, his friendships among Shiratorizawa develop his character beyond a simple antagonist.

Shoyo Hinata

Shoyo Hinata is a first year at Karasuno high school, middle blocker, and the series' protagonist. Despite his small stature and lack of experience, he dreams of becoming a volleyball player at the level of his idol, the Little Giant.

Hinata and Ushijima first meet when they cross paths during a conditioning run. After returning to Shiratorizawa, Ushijima tells Hinata and Tobio Kageyama he considers their school weak, having lost to Aoba Johsai. Hinata, fired up, challenges Ushijima, declaring that Karasuno will defeat him in the finals.

Satori Tendo

Satori Tendo is a third year at Shiratorizawa Academy and a middle blocker. He's known for his surprisingly accurate guess blocking technique, earning him the nickname "Guess Monster." He is one of Ushijima's closest friends, despite their nearly opposite personalities.

Growing up, Tendo had few friends due to his unusual appearance. After he discovered his talent for guess blocking, his teammates ostracized him further, calling him a freak. Coach Tanji Washijo discovered him and recruited him for the Shiratorizawa team his third year. Tendo admires Ushijima's skills and, not intimidated by him, befriends him.

Shiratorizawa Academy

Shiratorizawa Academy is considered one of the best high schools in Miyagi Prefecture. Known as a powerhouse school, the school's volleyball team almost always makes it to National competitions. Their playstyle focuses on brute strength and tall, technically skilled players. The school has produced several professional athletes, including Ushijima's father.
