About Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma: Story
The story starts with Soma Yukihira being told by his father, Joichi Yukihira, that he should attend Totsuki Culinary Academy to hone his cooking skills. Soma was initially trained by his father, the Yukihira Style, and works hard every time, aspiring to one day become a better chef than his father. However, Soma then learns that this culinary academy only has a graduation rate of 1% and is not the academy he had imagined. The story then follows Soma’s journey from the entrance exam, the countless food fights he participates in, and his journey to becoming the best chef he can become.
About Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma: Characters
Soma Yukihira is the main character of the series. He is a cheerful boy and constantly works hard to improve his craft. However, he is very competitive and results from the intense rivalry between him and his father. To continue to improve his skills, he repeatedly takes on challenges. He sets out to prove and learn other skills no matter the situation and notably never gives up no matter how dire the problem is. He is also very charismatic and friendly and has resulted in him forming very close bonds with many of his rivals and holding a strong bond with those in the Polar Star Dormitory.
Megumi Tadokoro is the heroine in Food Wars! and meets Soma at the Polar star Dormitory, where both of them live. While she is often seen as a clumsy and timid girl, she is kind and honest and is always there to help others. Her kind nature is clearly seen in her cooking and often melts the hearts of the people who eat it and also means she often is seen worrying over Soma and the many troubling situations he puts himself in. She is also always there to help Soma out in any way she can.
Erina Nakiri is a first-year student at Tostsuki Culinary Academy and is also the granddaughter of the school’s director. She is well respected due to her God’s Tongue. She has a delicate and refined palate and is a respected food taster. She holds a solid opinion on culinary and the chefs and, because of this, rejects Soma due to his ordinary upbringing. Although, Soma is still admitted into the academy. This irritates and hurts Erina’s pride, and she vows to make his life at the academy hell. Due to this, we see Soma and Erina butting heads on multiple occasions.

Food Wars! was published in 2012, written by Yuto Tsukuda and illustrated by Shun Saeki. After its first publication, the series was adapted into multiple seasons of anime and numerous video games.
Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma Series Development: Production
The series was first published as a manga in Weekly Shonen Jump from November 2012 to June 2019. This resulted in a total of 36 volumes being published. It was then later adapted into an anime, with five seasons airing, with 86 episodes. There have also been OVA adaptations released as a bundle along with the different volumes of the manga. In addition, there have also been two video games released based on Food Wars! The first is a mobile game named “Shokugeki no soma: The Ultimate Recipe.” It was released both for iOS and Android in August 2015. Another was released by Bandai Namco Entertainment for Nintendo 3DS in December 2015, titled “Shokugeki no Soma: The Dish of Friendship and Bonds”.

Food Wars! has been well received from the start, both domestically and globally. It was voted 12th in the 2014 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! Top 20 Manga for Male Readers and 3rd in the Nationwide Bookstore Employees Recommended Comics of 2014. As of 2020, the series had sold over 20 million copies. A spin-off series called “Shokugeki no Soma: L’etoile,” ran on the Shonen Jump+ website from February 2015 to June 2019. The chapters were later accumulated to produce eight volumes. Its immense popularity also led to the release of “Shokugeki no Sanji,” a crossover story with One Piece, first published in June 2018, with multiple sequels being uploaded in 2021.
