Karasuno High School's journey to victory earned them several rivals in the hit sports manga, Haikyu!! One of their first and greatest hurdles is the Miyagi powerhouse school, Aoba Johsai. With members like setter Toru Oikawa and ace Hajime Iwaizumi, the private high school quickly became a fan favorite. Iwaizumi in particular charmed readers and viewers with his cool, strong personality. Aoba Johsai's strong and reliable spiker, Hajime Iwaizumi, still looks cooler than ever in his debut Nendoroid figure. He wears his white version jersey with a bright teal collar and shorts. An additional upper body part shows him wearing his team jacket over his jersey. Interchangeable parts allow fans to pose him in action or with his arms crossed. About Hajime Iwaizumi

Hajime Iwaizumi is a third year at Aoba Johsai High School and serves as the volleyball team's ace. He is close friends with Toru Oikawa and served as a role model to Tobio Kageyama in middle school.

About Hajime Iwaizumi: Background

Iwaizumi is stubborn, taciturn, but reliable. He often serves as the morale booster and team unifier as the vice-captain over the captain, Oikawa. He attended the powerhouse school Kitagawa Daiichi in middle school and played as a wing spiker all three years. During that time, the team never won any tournaments, though they made it to the finals in his third year.

Like most of the Aoba Johsai volleyball team, Iwaizumi feels an intense rivalry with Shiratorizawa Academy. He and Oikawa formed a personal rivalry with Wakatoshi Ushijima, as his team defeated theirs every year since middle school. After their intense match with Karasuno at the Inter-high his third year, Iwaizumi viewed Karasuno as rivals as well.

About Hajime Iwaizumi: Abilities

While not nationally ranked, Iwaizumi possesses notable attack power, surpassing most players in the series. His powerful spikes served as one of Karasuno's first threats on the road to Nationals. It is also a running gag in the manga that Iwaizumi has incredible upper body strength. He is the arm wrestling champion at Aoba Johsai. Several extra manga panels also show Iwaizumi arm wrestling other strong players in the series.

As a child, Iwaizumi preferred spiking, thinking it was more fun to just smash the ball. However, as he matured as a player, he learned the joy of receiving another player's difficult serve or spike. Iwaizumi is also extremely confident, taking on intimidating challenges, like Dateko's Iron Wall, with ease. His confidence and strength make him well-liked and respected among the rest of the male characters.

Iwaizumi's most significant relationship in the series is his lifelong friendship with Oikawa. However, he also serves an important role in Kageyama's backstory and ongoing growth as a team player.

Toru Oikawa

Toru Oikawa is a fellow third year at Aoba Johsai High School and the volleyball team's setter and captain. Iwaizumi and Oikawa grew up together playing volleyball for fun then as a competitive sport. The two often experienced the bitterness of defeat together and felt the pressure of competing against genius players.

In middle school, Oikawa felt immense pressure to improve his individual skills. This caused him to fall into tunnel vision, overworking himself at practice. Iwaizumi snapped Oikawa out of his spiral, reminding him that volleyball is a sport with six players and the best six are the ones who win. Iwaizumi also tends to physically assault Oikawa for comedic effect, like hitting him in the head with a volleyball. Oikawa also teases Iwaizumi, often about his lack of popularity with girls.

Tobio Kageyama

Tobio Kageyama is a first year at Karasuno High School and the volleyball team's starting setter. His incredible technical skill puts him far ahead of his peers, limiting his ability to work well with others. Before attending Karasuno, Kageyama went to Kitagawa Daiichi Middle School. He was two years behind both Oikawa and Iwaizumi.

Kageyama's arrival spurred Oikawa's downward spiral. Unaware of his threat, Kageyama often turned to Oikawa for tips and mentoring, despite Oikawa's negative reactions. Iwaizumi shielded Kageyama from most of Oikawa's anger and his advice about the "stronger six" reached Kageyama as well. While Oikawa may be Kageyama's ideal setter and ultimate opponent, Iwaizumi remains his most respected senior.
