About Toru Oikawa

Toru Oikawa is a third year student at Aoba Johsai High School. He is also the captain and setter of the volleyball team. Oikawa is the top setter in the prefecture and serves as Tobio Kageyama's senior and rival.

About Toru Oikawa: Background

Oikawa has a flirtatious and frivolous personality. His ability to attract female fans angers other characters in the series, particularly Ryunosuke Tanaka and Yu Nishinoya. Oikawa's other traits, like his childish pettiness and aloofness, also earn him several enemies. However, underneath his somewhat gaudy personality, Oikawa is determined, hardworking, and ruthless.

Oikawa started playing volleyball in elementary school with his friend, Hajime Iwaizumi. His natural athletic ability and game sense caused Oikawa to quickly surpass his peers. However, Oikawa faced a crisis after meeting the upcoming genius setter, Tobio Kageyama. Kageyama and the Shiratorizawa power ace, Wakatoshi Ushijima, made Oikawa realize his own limitations. However, Oikawa chose to keep honing his skills and vowed to surpass his genius opponents.

About Toru Oikawa: Abilities

Oikawa is a top-level player in the series with incredible technical skills. His overall skills make him one of the best players in Miyagi Prefecture. Most of Aoba Johsai's opponents fear Oikawa's powerful jump serves. By the qualifiers for the Spring Tournament, Oikawa added a dangerous serve to his arsenal with the speed and power of a spike.

His greatest skill lies in his ability to read his spikers and draw out their potential. He can pinpoint his allies' and his opponents' strengths and weaknesses after a short observation. Oikawa is also a masterful strategist. For example, he used Akira Kunimi's perceived laziness as an energy reserve. When the rest of the team grew tired after a long set, Oikawa would shift strategy over to his unassuming teammate.

Oikawa has several enemies among the cast. However, his best friendship and potential rivalry are with his long-time teammate, Iwaizumi.

Hajime Iwaizumi

Hajime Iwaizumi is a third year at Aoba Johsai and the volleyball team's vice-captain and ace. His teammates and opponents admire him for his reliable and confident nature. Despite his role as just the vice-captain, Iwaizumi tends to command more respect in daily life from his teammates than Oikawa.

Oikawa and Iwaizumi have been friends since early childhood. Oikawa's flirtatious antics and teasing quickly anger Iwaizumi, who often retaliates with violence. They trust each other completely on the court. After losing to Karasuno in the semifinals, Iwaizumi claims that Oikawa was a partner he could boast about. They promise that if they ever face each other as opponents in the future, neither would hold back.

Aoba Johsai High School

Aoba Johsai High School, also known as Seijoh, is a private high school in Haikyu!! located in Miyagi Prefecture. The volleyball team is one of the top four in the prefecture. Most of their players attended Kitagawa Daiichi Junior High. Despite the team's high rank and talented players, Seijoh has rarely made it to Nationals.
