Z/X Code Reunion
Synopsis
A fragile peace has been brokered with the mysterious Zex, visitors from five other worlds. School girl Azumi Kakamigahara has been partnered with a Zex named Rigel as they each head off to the specially established Fujimisaki Academy.
Background
Z/X Code Reunion began as a collectible card game produced by Nippon Ichi Software and Broccoli and marketed as the first free-to-play series with card decks given away at card shops across Japan. A video game, Z/X Zillions of Enemy X: Zekkai no Crusade, was released for PS3 in May 2013 and the franchise has also been adapted into a manga illustrated by Karegashi Tsuchiya which began serialization in September 2012. A previous anime adaptation, Z/X Ignition, aired from January to March 2014.
Z/X Code Reunion was announced in February 2015 and adapts the manga written by Tatsuhiko Urahata and illustrated by Takuya Fujima which began serialization in V Jump in September 2017. The first season premiered on Oct. 8, 2019. Yui Ogura performs the series’ opening theme, “Destiny,” which is composed by Noriyasu Agematsu from Elements Garden. The ending theme “Girl Meets Girl” is performed by Ogura and Aya Uchida.
Characters
Azumi Kagamihara (Voiced by: Yui Ogura)
Introverted yet courageous and positive, Azumi Kagamihara signs a contract with Zen Rigel in exchange for treatment for an incurable illness and enrolls at Fujimisaki Academy to stand up against an oncoming threat. She can be a little naive.
Shuri Kijino (Voiced by: Aina Suzuki)
Shuri Kijino is talented but acts on instinct and sometimes gets herself mixed up in things.
Rigel (Voiced by: Aya Uchida)
Rigel is a Zex and wears a special power suit developed in scientifically advanced Blue World. At first, she plays it cool with Azumi, but…
Ena Soranokawa (Voiced by: Inori Minase)
Ena Soranokawa is the first girl Azumi meets at her new school. They quickly found they were on the same wavelength and became good friends. She has a soft touch with everyone and is good at taking the initiative.
Matoi Shinonome (Voiced by: Maria Naganawa)
Matoi Shinonome is a quiet girl who is always carrying her doll, Zonne. As she values the doll above all else, her attitude can change quickly if people try to touch it.
Muramasa (Voiced by: Megumi Yamaguchi)
Thought to be a Zex from the Red World, Muramasa is Shuri’s unbreakable sword.
Zonne (Voiced by: Mio Hoshitani)
Zonne is Matoi’s sentient doll and a Zex from another world.
Yuni Tsukigata (Voiced by: Miyu Tomita)
Yuni is a young woman who’s fond of saying that she doesn’t want to work. She’s totally laidback and a morale booster for those around her. Her partner Amurita doesn’t know what to make of her, but they get along well.
Ira (Voiced by: Momoko Soyama)
Ira is the teacher in charge of Azumi and her friends. She is reliable and big sisterly but is also spartan and easily angered.
Amurita (Voiced by: Nana Harumura)
Amurita is Yui’s Zex partner and comes from the Green World. She is a wild and free tiger person.
Nephrite (Voiced by: Yusuke Shirai)
Nephrite is Ina’s Zex partner and hails from the White World. Clever, Nephrite is particularly talented at strategy and detection.
