Synopsis
Fafner in the Azure: The Beyond continues the story of a group of children from Tatsumiya Island that pilot Fafners in a war against giant aliens called Festum as the last chance of survival for the human race. The children must have faith and courage as they can’t even know the details of their missions since Festum can read the minds of humans. As the series has ,some Festum have chosen to cohabitate Earth with humans, and not entirely human children protected by Festum have entered the story. The story continues in this sequel OVA.
Background
Fafner in the Azure: The Beyond is a sequel to Fafner in the Azure: Dead Aggressor -Exodus- and part of the long-running Fafner franchise. The Japanese mecha drama began as an anime series in 2014 produced by Xebec in collaboration with Starchild Records. It was directed by Nobuyoshi Habara, written by Yasuo Yamabe, Kazuki Yamanobe, and Tow Ubukata with character designs from Hisashi Hirai and mecha designs by Naohiro Washio.
This sequel will be directed by Takashi Noto, produced by Gou Nakanishi, written by Tow Ubukata, and feature music by Tsuneyoshi Saito. The Studio working on the 12-episode OVA, which will be streamed in Japanese theaters nationwide, is IG Zwei. The official theme song will be performed once again by angela.
Characters
Soshi Minashiro (Voiced by: Kohei Kiyasu)
Soshi Minashiro is the first battle commander of the mechas using the Siegfried System. He can also pilot the Fafner Mk Nicht. He is tasked with guiding other mechas camly as not to induce doubt in their pilots. He is the only one of the children on Tatsumiya Island that knows the truth of what is happening on Earth. He is the son of Minashiro Kouzou, the commander of the secret military fortress Alvis of the cloaked island Tatsumiya Island. Having been isolated as a child and presently, he is socially awkward.
Kazuki Makabe (Voiced by: Makoto Ishii)
Kazuki Makabe is the main protagonist of the Fafner franchise. He has piloted the Fafner Mark XI and Fafner Mark Sein. His mother was assimilated by Festum long ago so he lives with his father and cooks for him often, which made him into a good cook. He is humble, kind, and gentle and too honest to win any card game involving bluffing. Kazuki cares deeply for Sochi Minashiro, and the two became very close throughout the series.
Maya Tomi (Voiced by: Marika Matsumoto)
Maya Tomi pilots the Fafner Mark VII. She is a childhood friend of both Kazuki and Sochi. Her mother Chizuru is the only doctor on Tatsumiya Island. She is the best sniper of the Fafner pilots and can pilot the Mark Sieben (VIII). She is compassionate, strong willed, and keeps calm under pressure.
Koyo Kasugai (Voiced by: Miyu Irino)
Koyo Kasugai has feelings for Shoku but trouble expressing them. He becomes assimilated but seems to protect the island and fight alongside the children when it has been in danger.
Misao Kurusu (Voiced by: Ryohei Kimura)
Misao Kurusu is a Sphinx-type Festum that has a human form. After learning of the suffering of humans against the Festum, he sacrifices himself to shield the island from attack. He is reincarnated with his memories and personality intact as a Core-type Festum in Exodus.
Miwa Hino (Voiced by: Sumire Morohoshi)
Miwa Hino is the daughter of Michio and Yumiko. She is the first child born on Tatsumiya Island by natural conception and can understand the Mir language.
Kenji Kondo (Voiced by: Minoru Shiraishi)
Kaneji Kondo pilots the Mark Acht (VIII) and sees Kazuki as a rival, often challenging him to things despite also often losing. He becomes more mature as the series progresses and falls in love with as well as marries Sakura. He has the SDP ability which allows him to regenerate lost and destroyed parts of a Fafner in battle.
Rina Nishio (Voiced by: Ryoko Shiraishi)
Rina Nishio is the pilot of Mark Neun (IX) and Zero Fafner. Her SDP ability is boosting the power of Fafner armaments. She has an energetic and confident personality. She had a crush on Kenji Kondo.
Reo Mikado (Voiced by: Nobunaga Shimazaki)
Reo Mikado is the pilot of Mark Vierzehn (XIV) (“Susanoo”) He has a crush on Mimika Mikagami. His SDP Ability is teleportation via creating a dimensional portal.
Sui Kaburagi (Voiced by: Kensho Ono)
Sui Kaburagi is the pilot of Mark Sechszehn (XVI) (‘Amaterasu”). He has a crush on Rina Nishio. His SDP ability is summoning nearby objects or persons around him.
Mimika Mikagami (Voiced by: Yui Ishikawa)
Mimika Mikagami is the pilot of Mark Fünfzehn (XV) (“Tsukuyomi”). Her SDP ability is creating barriers.
Fumihiko Makabe (Voiced by: Masahiko Tanaka)
Fumihiko Makabe is the father of Kazuki Makabe and husband of Akane Makabe. After his wife was assimilated by the Festum he ran and lived above the Makabe Pottery Store on Tatsumiya.
Maris Excelsia (Voiced by: Soma Saito)
A supporting character whose details are currently unknown.
