Synopsis
Subaru Natsuki was your average Japanese shut-in playing video games all day, when suddenly and unexpectedly he was transported to a world of high-fantasy. Unable to return to his world, he begins his journey in the new world by believing himself a powerful hero. However, soon after his arrival, Subaru and his new Half Elf friend, Emilia, are brutally killed! Even more surprising, Subaru regains consciousness after death but it is back to a point in his recent past existing in the new world. He is the only one allowed to know about this phenomenon. Eventually, Subaru learns that this is some kind of power or curse he must carry, and the only way he can survive and save others is by being killed and learning from mistakes made in his previous lives.
Hyouketsu no Kizuna (Bond of Ice)* is an OVA prequel to the events of Re:Zero’s first season. It tells the story of how Emilia and her spirit, Puck, first met and formed their contract.
Background
Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World originated as a light novel written by Tappei Nagatsuki, with art drawn by Shinichirou Otsuka. The novel series began its run in the spring of 2012 and continues running at the time of the writing of this Otapedia entry. It spawned a critically acclaimed anime adaptation that aired from April to September 2016. Since then, Re:Zero has been the subject of multiple video games, anime shorts, crossover anime shows, and 2 OVA’s featured in Japanese theaters. The first OVA is called Re:Zero: Memory Snow. Bond of Ice is the second OVA. It was adapted from a light novel short story originally released back in 2016.
Characters
Subaru Natsuki (Voiced by: Yusuke Kobayashi)
Subaru Natsuki is the male main protagonist of the series. He was summoned by an unknown figure to the Dragon Kingdom of Lugnica. Subaru is under a curse that allows him to come back to life at a point in his past if he dies and continue returning to that point in the same way until he overcomes an obstacle. He falls in love with Emilia but constantly struggles to close the distance between them as he has grown fond of her through his countless lives while she, on the other hand, barely knows who he is.
Emilia (Voiced by: Rie Takahashi)
Emilia is a female Half Elf magic user and a candidate to be the next ruler of Lugnica. Because of her race, she has been ostracized by others in the kingdom. Many consider her unworthy to be a ruler, and Emlia now doubts her own worth. She is surprised by Subaru’s kindness toward her and for a time is suspicious of his motivations. But Emilia is a kindhearted person and gives him every chance to be in her good graces.
Puck (Voiced by: Yumi Uchiyama)
Puck is a spirit that has made a formal contract with Emilia. He is always at her side protecting her with his power, but because he is a spirit he rests at night and loses corporeal form. This leaves Emilia unguarded. Puck is also capable of transforming into a much more powerful form but usually looks like an adorable and cheerful floating cat.
Rem (Voiced by: Inori Minase)
Rem is a maid working for Roswaal L Mathers. She has short, light blue hair. Although cute in appearance, she is also a deadly fighter, being an Oni. She falls in love with Subaru but understands that he can not return her feelings.
Ram (Voiced by: Rie Murakawa)
Ram is the pink-haired identical twin of Rem. She always works as a maid for Roswaal L Mathers. In the past, Ram lost her Oni horn and her impressive abilities, but Rem still believes her sister is better than her in every way.
Roswaal L. Mathers (Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu)
Roswaal is the eccentric owner of Roswaal Mansion who has taken in Emilia as his own. He is considered the most powerful magic user in the kingdom and possesses the Divine Protection of Sorcery.
