Synopsis

Takuya Arima lost his mother when he was a child, and more recently his historian father goes missing while conducting research. He finds himself spending his last summer vacation of high school depressed and with no hope in anything. Then one day he receives a strange package filled with glass balls and seemingly useless round mirrors along with a letter. The letter not only provides instructions, but also suggests that his father could still be alive. Following the instructions in the letter, Takuya soon meets a mysterious girl and learns the he possesses a device that gives him the power to travel to parallel worlds. So begins Takuya’s world-jumping journey to find his father.

Background

YU-NO: A Girl Who Chants Love at the Bound of This World was originally a visual novel developed by ELF Corporation for PC-98 in 1996. In addition to various ports and remakes of the game, it has also spawned a four-episode OVA in 1998 and two manga adaptations: one by Mario Kaneda that was serialized in G Fantasy magazine from 1997 to 1998, and one by Soji Ishida that began in Comic Clear magazine in March 2017.

A new anime adaptation was announced in 2016. It is being produced by Feel in collaboration with MAGES and GENCO. It is being directed by Hirakawa with scripts by Tetsuo Hirakawa, character designs by Mai Otsuka, and music by Keishi Yonao and Ryu Takami. The cast from the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita remake of the original game is returning to reprise their characters. The anime will span two cours for a total of 26 episodes. The opening theme song is "Kono Yo no Hate de Koi o Utau Shojo" by Asaka, and the ending thems song is "Shinri no Kagami, Ken no Yo ni” by Konomi Suzuki. The anime will premiere in Japan on April 2, 2019.

Characters

Takuya Arima (Voiced by: Yuu Hayashi)

The protagonist of the story, Takuya is a third-year student at Sakaimachi Academy. His mother died when he was young, and later his historian father goes missing after an accident while collecting research. He currently lives with his stepmother, Ayumi.

Kanna Hatano (Voiced by: Maaya Uchida)

A third-year student at Sakaimachi Academy, Kanna is a mysterious girl who just transferred to the school.

Yu-No (Voiced by: Ari Ozawa)

The heroine of the story, Yu-No is a mysterious girl Takuya encounters. Takuya names her “You Know?”.

Mio Shimazu (Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya)

A third-year student at Sakaimachi Academy, Mio was born into a distinguished family. She has feelings for Takuya, whom she infamously calls the “Walking Libido.”

Mitsuki Ichijo (Voiced by: Saori Onishi)

Kozo’s personal secretary, Mitsuki was at one time in charge of history class at Sakaimachi Academy. She becomes friends with Takuya to distance herself from her unrealistic feelings for Kozo.

Eriko Takeda (Voiced by: Yu Kobayashi)

Eriko is both the school doctor and in charge of Takuya’s class. She lived in Europe until her new appointment at the school two months prior. She wears sexy outfits underneath her doctor’s coat, and she openly smokes in front of students.

Kaori Asakura (Voiced by: Rena Maeda)

A newscaster on the program News Presence, Kaori thinks the mysterious bolts of lightning off the coast of Sakaimachi have to do with Geo Technics’ construction work and fully blames Ayumi, who supervised the project.

Ayumi Arima (Voiced by: Kaori Nazuka)

Takuya’s stepmother, Ayumi is the supervisor of Geo Technics’ construction work off the coast of Sakaimachi. Six months prior to the events of the story she married Takuya’s father, Koudai.

Kozo Ryuzoji (Voiced by: Taiten Kusunoki)

The principal of Sakaimachi Academy, Kozo specializes in history and is currently separated from his wife. Impressed by his research, he invites Koudai to Sakaimachi Academy.

Masakatsu Yuki (Voiced by: Yuki Fujiwara)

A second-year student at Sakaimachi Academy, Masakatsu becomes enamored with Takuya after he saves him from a bind. He has feelings for Mio, but his advances never go well.

Hideo Toyotomi (Voiced by: Takuya Eguchi)

An employee at Geo Technics, Hideo works underneath Ayumi as the site foreman of a geological survey.
