Synopsis

Shinsaku Takasugi and Kogoro Katsura return to Kyoto only to discover another rupture in the fabric of time. Encountering the Shinsengumi, they realize there is another Mugensai to contend with. Can they return? Can anything change? At the mercy of an unchangeable fate, the pair find themselves at the beginning of a new adventure.

Background

Bakumatsu Crisis is the second season of the anime inspired by the Renai Bakumatsu Kareshi smartphone game and will premiere on April 4, 2019. It is being directed by Mitsutoshi Sato at Studio DEEN with Masahiro Yokotani writing the script, Hidekazu Shimamura adapting Natsuki’s original character designs for animation, and Ryo Kawasaki and Go Sakabe handing the music. Hi!Superb will perform the opening theme song, "Brave Rejection."

Characters

Saito Hajime (Voiced by: Keita Tada)

Saito Hajime is the commander of the third unit of the Shinsengumi. He is as good a swordsman as Okita and is often placed in charge of purges and assassinations. He is often paired with Okita for collaborative missions and has sworn his loyalty to Kondo but sometimes exposes the truth by speaking ill of him.

Sakamoto Ryoma (Voiced by: Shinichiro Miki)

Sakamoto Ryoma is well mannered and good at getting close to people but is also good at thinking outside of the box when it comes to fulfilling his aims. An extremely quick thinker, Sakamoto has excellent business sense and adaptability as he wanders across Japan.

The Emperor (Voiced by: Shunsuke Takeuchi)

The Emperor is the most powerful person in the imperial court.

Yamazaki Susumu (Voiced by: Taku Yashiro)

Yamazaki Susumu is a spy working for the Shinsengumi. He has sworn his loyalty to Tokugawa Yoshinobu and is willing to risk his life to protect him. He is fundamentally mild-mannered but is able to stand up to even Kondo where Yoshinobu is concerned. He has a light build and is also extraordinarily nimble.

Katsura Kogoro (Voiced by: Takuya Eguchi)

Katsura Kogoro is level-headed, serious, and quite the gallant hero. He often ends up playing the straight man to the dynamic Takasugi and has a tendency to get pulled into his various adventures. Even so, more than anyone else he and Takasugi have a relationship of absolute trust.

Kondo Isami (Voiced by: Takuya Sato)

Kondo Isami is the head of the Shinsengumi and always has the well-being of his men as his top priority. In contrast to Hijikata’s austerity, Kondo is well liked for his steadfastness and does his best to bring together the rowdy men of the Shinsengumi. He is generous of spirit towards friends, extremely insightful, and prepared for whatever happens.

Tokugawa Yoshinobu (Voiced by: Tatsuhisa Suzuki)

Tokugawa Yoshinobu is the 15th Tokugawa Shogun. He has a tendency to put himself to one side while worrying about everything going on around him and also excels at martial arts. Because of a certain incident, he is very fond of Yamazaki.

Hijikata Toshizo (Voiced by: Toshiyuki Someya)

Hijikata Toshizo is the deputy head of the Shinsengumi and true believer in the force’s chief, Kondo. A strict disciplinarian, he inspires fear in his subordinates but is actually very compassionate and worries about people in trouble. He cares more about Kondo and the Shinsengumi than anyone else.

Okita Soji (Voiced by: Tsubasa Yonaga)

Okita Soji is a member of the first unit of the Shinsengumi. His ubiquitous smile masks a battle-crazed heart. He is uncompromising, and while able to complete his missions with natural good sense, he is prepared to unleash his raw emotions on the things which get in the way of his target and can sometimes seem like an unbalanced child.

Seimei (Voiced by: Yoshiki Nakajima)

Seimei has the ability to manipulate time and predict time disturbances. Those enveloped by the light Seimei emits are able to retain their memories of past timelines.

Okada Izo (Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka)

Okada Izo is the head of Sakamoto’s guard and often works alongside him. With his slender frame, Okada is able to undertake all kinds of missions and is a particularly good swordsman. He is always alert and possesses an explosive force which sets him apart from all others.

Takasugi Shinsaku (Voiced by: Yuichi Nakamura)

A revolutionary from Choshu, Takasugi Shinsaku is a reckless young man willing to brave any danger if it’s in the name of a cause he believes in. He is often scolded by his comrade Katsura for his devil may care conduct. As a graduate of the Shoka Sonjuku school led by Yoshida Shoin, Takasugi still holds his teachings dear in his heart and has an extremely strong sense of duty.

Mori Ranmaru (Voiced by: Yumiri Hanamori)

Mori Ranmaru has decided to serve Mugensai as long as he lives.

Kasumi (Voiced by: Kei Shindo)

Kasumi is a spy working for the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Hyou (Voiced by: Nanami Yamashita)

Hyou works for the Tokugawa Shogunate as a spy.

Mugensai II (Voiced by: TBC)

Mugensai II wants Japan to be unyielding and stronger even than the samurai.

Yoshida Shoin (Voiced by: Wataru Hatano)

Yoshida Shoin is an intellectual educating many young samurai at Shokasonjuku Academy.

Mugensai (Voiced by: Hiroyuki Kinoshita)

Mugensai is a mysterious masked general presiding over an alternate bakufu.

Takasu Hisako (Voiced by: Fuyuka Oura)
