Midara na Ao-chan wa Bekyo ga Dekinai

Ao Horie is a high school student with a traumatic past. In grade school, she gave a speech on Parents’ Day in front of her classmates and said that her name comes from the word “aokan” (the Japanese word for “outdoor sex”). You see, Ao’s father was a renowned erotic author and she had no idea the erotic information he shared with her was at all inappropriate. Immediately teased and outcast by her classmates for saying something so ecchi, Ao learned to isolate herself from everyone else. She considered them as “normies.” Ao devoted herself to her studies and became a straight-A student with dreams to go to a top university far away from her ecchi father. But her plans were suddenly complicated when a boy named Takumi Kijima started taking a liking to her. Influenced by her father, Ao-san’s overactive imagination is constantly conjuring up nasty and naughty situations between herself and Kijima. She can’t understand what’s going on, but it’s distracting her from her studies! Whatever will she do?!

Ao-chan Can't Study! is a manga series that ran in Kodansha from October 2015 to December 2018. It was written and illustrated by Ren Kawahara. Kodansha USA has licensed the series in North America, and an anime adaptation is set to begin airing in April 2019. Keisuke Inoue is the director and Silver Link is helming the production.

Ao Horie (Voiced by: Azumi Waki)

The female main protagonist of the story. Because her father has always been writing dirty books, her entire life has been covered in a “white noise” of eroticism. She’s done a good job tuning it out at home but also avoids any interactions at school, especially with guys, convinced they “literally only want one thing and it’s freaking disgusting.” Although intelligent and a great student, Ao lacks experience socially interacting with others. She’s overwhelmed when Kijima-kun talks to her, unable to tell the difference between lust and love. She often overthinks every move he makes and is extremely insecure about how her own actions are regarded.

Takumi Kijima (Voiced by: Junta Terashima)

A male student who confesses his feelings for Ao. Ao calls him “The Normie King.” Takumi is athletic and handsome. Ao thinks he’s a sexually experienced stud just trying to get in her panties, but he genuinely likes her. Because of this, he’s often nervous when they see each other. He is unaware that Ao’s father is a famous erotic author.

Miyabi Takaoka (Voiced by: Juri Kimura)

Miyabi was classmates with Ao in grade school and knows about the “orgy” story. Ao looks up to Miyabi for being athletic and attractive, but Miyabi has always been jealous of Ao. The two hadn’t seen each other in years but cross paths during the events of the story. She decides to get back at Ao by going after Takumi and throwing herself at him. The two girls have an off-beat rivalry for his affections.

Kasaki Horie (Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda)

Ao’s father. He’s a famous erotic author. Unlike other parents, he doesn’t shy away from the topic of sex when talking to her. In fact, he encourages Ao’s sexual awakening, much to Ao’s chagrin. He’s often portrayed as a funny-looking, wide-eyed chibi.

Soichiro Yabe (Voiced by: Takashi Kondo)

Yabe-san is Kasaki-san’s editor. He’s young, handsome, and wears glasses. He has visited the Horie residence hundreds of times and believes he is more familiar with Ao than any of her classmates.

Shuhei Yonezuka (Voiced by: Toshinari Fukamachi)

Takumi’s friend. He’s more serious than Uehara and wears glasses.

Masaki Uehara (Voiced by: Yusuke Shirai)

Masaki is classmates with Ao and Takumi. He often has sex on his mind like most boys. Even though he can be insensitive about that subject, he does prove to be thoughtful at times. For example, he supports his friend Takumi, especially in his quest to hook up with Ao.
