Synopsis
In modern Asakusa, Tokyo, three junior high boys meet a kappa, a mythical Japanese creature. The kappa, named Keppi, is the prince of the Kappa Kingdom, or so he says. Keppi steals the boys’ shirikodama, a mythical organ that kappa usually steal. The process transforms the three into kappa. In order to return to their normal selves, they will have to steal the shirikodoma of zombies, give them to Keppi, and connect in some mysterious way.
Background
Sarazanmai is an original anime series directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara (Revolutionary Girl Utena, Mawaru Penguindrum, Yurikuma Arashi) and animated by MAPPA (Yuri!!! on Ice) and Lapin Track. Its music is composed by Yukari Hashimoto (Mawaru Penguindrum) and Studio Pablo. The opening theme song is titled “Massara” by Kana-Boon, and the closing track is “Stand By Me” by The Peggies. Sarazanmai will premiere in Japan in April 2019. A spin-off manga began serialization in May 2018.
Characters
Kazuki Yasaka (Voiced by: Ayumu Murase)
One of the main protagonists of the story. Kazuki is a second-year junigh high student who used to love soccer. He has black hair and brown eyes. He wears a red scarf in his kappa form.
Toi Kuji (Voiced by: Koki Uchiyama)
One of the main protagonists of the story. Toi is a second-year junigh high student who is often alone due to a rumor spread in his class. He transferred into Kazuki’s class. He has dark blue hair and blue eyes. He prefers a hoodie over his school uniform and wears a blue scarf in his kappa form.
Enta Jinnai (Voiced by: Shun Horie)
One of the main protagonists of the story. He is Kazuki’s childhood friend. The two used to be in soccer club together and were so good that they were called the “Golden Combo.” His hair is light brown and he wears glasses. He prefers to sport a cream-colored sweater vest over his school uniform and rolls up his pants. Enta wears an orange scarf in his kappa form.
Keppi (Voiced by: Junichi Suwabe)
A kappa said to be the heir to the throne of the Kappa Kingdom. Rather than looking similar to the boys who turned into kappas, Keppi looks more like an egg with stubs for legs.
Reo Niiboshi (Voiced by: Mamoru Miyano)
A police officer who works in a police box with Mabu Akutsu. He has long white hair and grayish skin.
Mabu Akutsu (Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya)
A police officer who works in a police box with Reo Niiboshi. He has short gray hair, wears glasses, and has a light complexion.
