Synopsis
Having lost her mother in a car crash, Tohru goes to live with her grandfather, but after being treated unkindly she decides to live in a tent until she comes across a home where her popular classmate Yuki Soma and his cousin Shigure live. Soon she finds out there is a curse upon him and his family which makes them transform into animals of the Chinese zodiac when they experience intense emotion such as embarrassment or anger. She promises to tell no one and even to help remove the curse, changing the lives of the Soma clan one by one.
Background
The new Fruits Basket anime adaptation to debut in April 2019 on TV Tokyo, TV Osaka, and TV Aichi (w/ streaming and home video licensure by FUNimation) will adapt the entire manga as well as have an entirely new cast and staff. Yoshihide Ibata is directing, Taku Kishimoto is managing the series composition, and Masaru Shindou is handling the character designs.
Characters
Tohru Honda (Japanese: Manaka Iwami | English: Laura Bailey)
An orphaned high schooler who loves to cook, is an excellent housekeeper, and works as an office janitor after school to pay her tuition. She is kindhearted and wants to remove the curse on the Soma clan.
Arisa Uotani (Japanese: Atsumi Tanezaki | English: Elizabeth Maxwell)
Arisa is one of Tohru’s best friends. She has a motherly and somewhat aggressive personality, always showing her emotions and being true to them whether it is happiness, sadness, or something else.
Saki Hanajima (Japanese: Satomi Sato | English: Jad Saxton)
Saki is one of Tohru’s best friends. She usually dresses in all black and has food on her mind. She claims to be able to read others’ minds and affect them through “electric waves.”
Akito Soma (Japanese: Maya Sakamoto | English: Colleen Clinkenbeard)
Shrouded in mystery, Akito is the head of the Soma clan and is often emotionally abusive and cruel to many of the Chinese zodiac animals.
Yuki Soma (Japanese: Nobunaga Shimazaki | English: Eric Vale)
Yuki is Tohru’s popular classmate who is so handsome and athletic he has a fan club and is referred to as “prince” by his classmates. He hates cleaning and isn’t good at cooking. He is the rat.
Kyo Soma (Japanese: Yuma Uchida | English: Jerry Jewell)
Kyo, despite being quick tempered, is a kind soul. Instead of finishing his senior year in high school he took to the mountains to train. However, he is now being made to attend the same high school as Tohru. He is the cat.
Shigure Soma (Japanese: Yuichi Nakamura | English: John Burgmeier)
Usually seen wearing a kimono, Shigure is a novelist and substitute guardian of Kyo and Yuki. It is difficult to tell his true feelings. He often worries his editor with his whereabouts before his deadlines. He is the dog.
Kagura Soma (Japanese: Rie Kugimiya | English: Tia Ballard)
Kagura practices martial arts to become stronger and stronger. She’s infatuated with Kyo. It’s a one-sided love situation. She is the boar.
Momiji Soma (Japanese: Megumi Han | English: Mikaela Krantz)
Despite being young looking, he’s only a year younger than Kyo and Yuki. His mother is Japanese and father german so he can speak German. He is the rabbit.
Hatori Soma (Japanese: Kazuyuki Okitsu| English: Kent Williams)
Hatori is the Soma’s personal doctor and the only one with the ability to suppress the memory or knowledge of their curse in other people. He dresses in business attire and has a cold, calm, and sombor personality. He is the seahorse (dragon).
Hatsuharu "Haru" Soma (Japanese: Makoto Furukawa | English: Justin Cook)
Haru is constantly made fun of at school for his cursed white and black hair. He has two sides of his personality, black which is violent, perverted, and cruel, and white which is laidback, calm, and kind. He is the cow.
Ayame "Aya" Soma (Japanese: Takahiro Sakurai | English: Christopher Sabat)
Aya is Yuki’s older brother who runs a lingerie/clothing store. Loud and flamboyant, he wishes he was closer to Yuki. He is the snake.
