Pokemon Amiibo - Merchandise
Pokemon is one of the most recognizable and popular franchises around, so it should be no surprise that several amiibo recreating some of the more iconic creatures have been created. Amiibo is Nintendo’s line of figures that have an NFC chip that allows them to communicate with various Nintendo games and unlock a variety of different features, depending on what game is being played. The figures themselves recreate many different characters from Nintendo properties, though it began Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. Since a number of Pokémon are playable characters in Super Smash Bros., several amiibo based on Pokémon were made under the game’s label instead of Pokémon’s label. That said, amiibo for other Pokémon games have been made as well, like Detective Pikachu. Many fans enjoy the collectibility and functionality, so much so that, when the amiibo were first introduced, many retailers faced shortages. That said, most amiibo are now available more commonly found. Some of the most popular amiibo products include the “Pokémon Mewtwo amiibo w/ Free Pikachu amiibo”, the “amiibo Super Smash Bros. Wave 4 - Charizard (US Ver.)”, and the “Detective Pikachu amiibo”.
Pokémon Mewtwo amiibo w/ Free Pikachu amiibo
This amiibo set comes with the Mewtwo amiibo and Pikachu as a free bonus item. The Mewtwo amiibo features the legendary psychic Pokémon standing in a powerful, authoritative pose with its bulb-like fingers extended outward, as if inviting a challenger. Mewtwo also has a fierce expression and is also perfectly recreated, as is his long, purple tail. On the other hand, the Pikachu amiibo features the instantly recognizable Pokémon standing straight up with its arms at its side. Details like Pikachu’s long, pointy black-tipped ears, lightning bolt tail, and bright red cheeks are also faithfully recreated. Both of these amiibo also have the ability to connect to a variety of Nintendo games and unlock many different features. For example, when used with Super Smash Bros., the player can fight an A.I. fighter that they can then train into an incredibly strong opponent. When used with other games, these amiibo can unlock things like special bonus items and other extra content.

amiibo Super Smash Bros. Wave 4 - Charizard (US Ver.)
This Charizard amiibo is also a part of the Super Smash Bros. series of amiibo, but features the Pokémon just as it appears on the Pokémon series. The figure has Charizard standing up with both of its arms held in front of his body while his blazing tail wraps around its side. Charizard’s wings are also stretched out wide, making it seem like it might be preparing to fly. This pose truly highlights Charizard’s strength and fighting ability, as it seems like it will strike at any moment.

Detective Pikachu amiibo
This fun Detective Pikachu amiibo shows the unique take on the iconic Pokémon as an intelligent with his characteristic detective’s hat. Detective Pikachu is posing standing with his feet firmly planted on the ground as he holds one hand out as he wears a slightly angry expression, making it seem like he is trying to stop a suspect from proceeding any further. This amiibo is listed under its own unique series, meaning that it has several different uses than the previous amiibo. When used with the Detective Pikachu game, for example, this amiibo will unlock all available “Pika Prompts”, which are short animated cutscenes that have the character speak with the player’s character.

About Pokémon amiibo
Although Pokémon is its own series, there are currently no amiibo based on any Pokémon that are made under the Pokémon series itself. Rather, nearly all amiibo based on Pokémon are made under the Super Smash Bros. series, as a number of Pokémon like Pikachu, Mewtwo, Lucario, Charizard, and more are all playable characters in the popular crossover fighting game. One of the only exceptions to this is the Detective Pikachu amiibo, which from the Pokémon spin-off featuring the titular character. That said, there are currently 12 unique amiibo figures that are based on various Pokémon. As most of these amiibo are made under Super Smash Bros., the main connective feature allows players to create virtual fighters in the game that they can train, customize, and level up, making them even stronger with time. Of course, the Pokémon amiibo are also compatible with other Nintendo games, though the level of compatibility varies for each amiibo.
Reviews
Although Pokémon amiibo weren't made for all Pokémon in the series, Pokémon amiibo are incredibly popular among fans, especially since they unlock special content for a variety of games. Some of the more popular amiibo have sold out, with fans saying that they enjoy making them a part of the game experience. Some even complement Nintendo for its great work with the amiibo’s stylish packaging.
