About Digimon
Shortly after the creation of Tamagotchi in 1996, a virtual pet meant to be played on a small handheld device, the creators of Digimon launched their own virtual pet device, Digimon. Digimon was a virtual pet that could evolve and battle with other Digimon. To aid the popularization of Digimon, efforts were made into popularizing the concept by launching a one-shot manga in 1997 and a Windows 95 fighting game in 1998 called DigiMon. A trading card game was launched early in the creation of the franchise (1997), but it was only later that it would become popular. There have been seven different anime adaptations under the Digimon franchise name. Each of them contains an original story, but all of them are consistent with the Digimon lore. These adaptations are called Digimon Adventure, Digimon Adventure 02, Digimon Tamers, Digimon Frontiers, Digimon Data Squad, Digimon Fusion, and Digimon Universe: App Monsters.
A second generation of Digimon virtual pets was launched only six months after the initial launch of the device in 1997. A third generation was later unveiled in 1998. By 2004, seven years after its initial release, the Digimon handheld devices had sold more than 13 million units in Japan alone, with more than one million being sold overseas.
With the release of the Digimon anime in 1999, the world of Digimon was substantially expanded, adding many creatures and mythology to the Digimon lore. Digimon, which hatch from eggs called DigiEggs, inhabit a parallel world which is connected to the real world. This world, the Digital World, is made up entirely of Data and is connected to the internet. As the internet expands, the Digital World does, too. There are currently over 1400 Digimon.
