Axel is one of the most well-known characters from the critically acclaimed Kingdom Hearts Series. With a mysterious and calm attitude, it is no wonder he captured the hearts of fans. Axel is ranked VIII of Organization XIII. He can control fire and enhance his weapons with pyrokinesis to unleash devastating attacks.

About Axel: Background

Axel first appears in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. He is a character that is hard to decipher. He has a mysterious presence and is an excellent liar. This makes it difficult to gauge where his loyalty lies and allows him to manipulate others easily.

As time progresses, Axel sees cruel moments as he betrays Larxene and Zexion. He boldly states that he would hurt Namine to get to Marluxia. His personality goes through multiple changes throughout the games. Notably, when he becomes friends with Roxas and Xion, he becomes more laid back and sarcastic. This is also a rare moment where he genuinely cares for his friends. He is very protective of Roxas and Xion and is similar to an older brother. Axel even goes as far as betraying Saix to protect Roxas and Xion. His genuine care for friends initially keeps him loyal to Saix, but after realizing Saix has altered for the worst, he abandons him for Roxas and Xion.

Roxas is the only person who can significantly affect Axel. So when Roxas passes away, this is the only time we see Axel shed something similar to a teardrop from his eyes.

About Axel: Abilities

Axel is known to use weapons called the Chakrams. They are two weapons uniquely shaped and aids in his fire manipulation. He can summon flames at will and can quickly attack using his Chakrams. Another tactic he uses is to surround the entire Chakram in flames and throw it like a boomerang. This allows him to strike opponents multiple times and deal intense damage. Axel can also ignite his Chakrams at will from a distance, allowing him to use it as a remote detonator as well.

He has immense strength, seen in his attitude to the influential members of the Organization. Previously, Axel wounded Vexen with little effort, despite being injured himself. The only person who can match his power is Xemnas. Xemnas is the only person who is able to make him do things he does not want to. Axel himself admits that Xemnas would be able to destroy him instantly.

Other Important Kingdom Heart Characters

While due to his cold and mysterious presence, he does not have many friends. However, he was a close friend of Roxas and Xion and protected them like his own siblings.

Roxas

Roxas is one of Axel's first close friends. Axel was tasked to take care of Roxas after his induction into the Organization. Axel seems to have taken a liking for Roxas and would often talk with him. The two shared a bond akin to brotherhood. The two would always go to the clock tower to talk about their troubles. Roxas particularly admirers Axel's attitude and considers him the most remarkable member of the Organization.

Xion

When Xion first arrived at Organization XIII she was shy and quiet. However, she starts to open up when she goes on a mission with Roxas and begins to trust him and then later starts depending on Axel and opens up to him. Axel initially sees Xion as a mere puppet, but as time passes, he begins to see her for her and extends it to call her a friend.

Larxene

The two seem to have some form of friendship. However, they are seen together bickering at each other on many occasions. Axel, in particular, talks to Larxene when Marluxia is away. Larxene almost always acts flirtatiously to Axel. However, he is unfazed by this. Ultimately, as the series progresses, Axel betrays Larxene to save Roxas and Xion.
