Fate Classes & Servants Overview

Servants fight for their Master in the Holy Grail War. They are usually summoned with an artifact referred to as a Catalyst and summoning ritual. They can be Heroic Spirits, Divine Spirits, Phantoms, Wraiths, and even living people for the future.

They are too powerful for humans to control but usually the Master is given three Command Seals to command them to do actions they wouldn’t otherwise do even going as far to commit suicide.

Servants are also able to switch between a Material Body and Spiritual Body which is not easily noticeable by humans, mages, or other Servants. Under most circumstances Servants are not able to exist very long without a Master providing them with Mana they use for their strength and to anchor themselves in the world. This is why they must find another contract quickly should they lose their Master. Some servants are not able to last as long as others. And it takes much more effort to keep them materialized after the Holy Grail War.

Once summoned Servants are given enough information about the modern world that they are able to function within it. However the information they receive is not all encompassing so sometimes the Servants are surprised by what they learn of the world which was previously unknown during their time such as Rider learning just how large it is.

The Master and Servant are able to see past memories of each other through dreams. Under certain circumstances a Servant can possess a human and become a Demi-Servant or Pseudo-Servants.

There are also Servent Cards, High-Servants, Pseudo-Servants, Shadow Servants, Solo Servants, Stray Servants, Top Servants, and Udon Servants.

There are several classes for Servants in the Fate series and even more in the entirety of the Nasuverse.

Each Servant also has an alignment which includes Good (Lawful, Neutral, Chaotic), Neutral (Lawful, True, Chaotic), Evil (Lawful, Neutral, Chaotic) Summer (Lawful, Neutral, Chaotic, Insane), Mad (Lawful, Neutral, Chaotic, Insane), Bride (Lawful, Neutral, Chaotic, Insane), Reckless (Lawful, Neutral, Chaotic, Insane) and Variable which changes depending on the Master.

Servants have the following primary stats: Strength, Endurance, Agility, Magical Power, Good Luck, and Noble Phantasm. Mad Enhancement and Berserker class can make them even more powerful. There are several factors that impact how strong they are. They can also be strengthened through such things as Ascension (in the FATE system), Form Change: Altered Morphology (in Fate/Extella) and Mythological Mystic Code.

Their True Name reveals much about them, what wish they might have for the Holy Grail, and how they will fight in battle because it tells of who they once were (or are if a living person was summoned from the future). Some Servants are unafraid and more than willing to share their True Name such as Rider, King of Conquerors/Alexander the Great, in Fate/Zero.

Their True Names might also have Alter, Lilly, or Santa added to their name. Alter is used when the Servant varies greatly from their normal self. Lily for a younger version of a Servant. And Santa for Christmas themed events on Fate/Grand Order.

Classification includes Three Knight classes (Saber, Lancer, and Archer), and Four Calvary classes (Rider, Caster, Assassin, and Berserker). These are the standard classes. There are also non-standard classes such as Ruler with overseas the Holy Grail War and several more classes in the entirety of the Nasuverse including Alter Ego, Ancient Giant, Avenger, Beast, Faker, Foreigner, Funny Vamp, Gatekeeper, Grand Archer, Grand Assassin, Grand Caster, Gunner, MoonCancer, Ruler, Saver, Shielder, and Watcher.
