Overview
Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Work is originally the second narrative route of the Fate/stay night eroge visual novel created by TYPE-MOON. This route focuses more on the romantic relationship between Shirou Emiya and Rin Tohsaka.
The story of Unlimited Blade Works was adapted into a feature film made by Studio Deen. It was released on January 23, 2010. It was later adapted again into an anime series produced by Ufotable that aired from 2014 to 2015.
Synopsis
Ten years have passed since the fallout of the Fourth Holy Grail War left Fuyuki City in a fiery destruction. Rin Tohsaka, a teenaged girl and a gifted mage participating in the Fifth Holy Grail War, summons Archer as her Servant. Archer fights Lancer at Rin’s school, a sight that is only witnessed by Shirou Emiya, Rin’s classmate. Believing there shouldn’t be witnesses to the war, Lancer attacks Shirou and kills him. However, Rin is able to save Shirou’s life with a magic pendant. Lancer finds and attacks Shirou again, but Shirou is surprisingly able to summon Saber to protect him and force Lancer to flee. A little later, the overseer of the war, Kirei Kotomine, explains to Shirou that he is a Master and what the Holy Grail War is.
Shirou offers to be allied Masters with Rin in the war just as a third Master reveals herself - Illyasviel von Einzbern. Illya controls Berserker to fight against Saber, Archer, Rin and Shirou. The fight ends in a draw when Archer releases a massive blast.
The next day, Rin and Shirou sense something strange on the school grounds. They discover that their classmate, Shinji Matou, is the Master of Rider. Shirou summons Saber, and the three of them confront Shinji, but he is trembling like a coward in the corner of a classroom. The three also find out Rider has been killed. Shinji runs away from the scene and is later given Gilgamesh as a new Servant by Kirei Kotomine.
While sleeping, Shirou is captured by Caster and forced to sleepwalk to Ryuudou Temple. Saber tries to reach Shirou to rescue him but is occupied by Assassin blocking her path. Just as Caster is about to steal Shirou’s Command Seals, Archer rescues him and defeats Caster. Archer then lets Caster live and attacks Shirou for disagreeing on how to continue the war. Saber steps in and stops Archer. On the way back home, Caster stabs Saber with Rule Breaker, breaking the contract between Shirou and Saber. Saber falls under Caster’s control but is able to resist attacking Rin and Shirou by strength of will. Rin and Shirou are able to escape, but Saber is taken away by Caster.
Later, Caster kills Kirei and takes over Fuyuki Church. Archer and Rin confront Caster and her Master, Souichirou Kuzuki. Believing them unable to win, Archer turns on Rin on the condition that Caster spare Shirou and Rin. Shirou and Rin then approach Illya to form an alliance.
The two arrive at Illya’s home, where Illya and her Berserker are fighting Shinji and Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh kills Berserker and rips out Illya’s heart. Shinji proposes to Rin and Shirou that they form an alliance but the two refuse before he and Gilgamesh leave. Then Lancer shows up and offers to assist them. Rin and Shirou accept the offer.
Back at the Church, Rin, and Shirou battle against Caster and Kuzuki while Lancer takes on Archer. Archer double crosses Caster and kills both Caster and Kuzuki. After this, Archer tries to kill Shirou. To save him, Rin forms a contract with Saber. Then Archer activates a reality marble, the Unlimited Blade Works. He uses the powerful attack on Saber and Shirou, giving him a chance to kidnap Rin.
Shirou and Archer confront one another at the Einzbern castle. Shirou learns that Archer is actually his future self. Shirou and Archer fight as Lancer saves Rin from Shinji and Kirei (Lancer’s Master). Although Kirei commands Lancer to kill Rin, he is able to resist, leading to his own death. But before he dies, he is able to kill Kirei and start a fire at the castle. Shinji runs away like a coward. Meanwhile, Shirou defeats Archer but is interrupted by the arrival of Gilgamesh who gravely wounds Archer. Later, Gilgamesh inserts Illya’s heart into Shinij, transforming him into a blob that looks as disgusting as he is on the inside. And Rin gives part of her Command Seals to Shirou.
In the final showdown at Ryuudou Temple, Rin and Shirou fight Gilgamesh while Saber takes on Assassin. After defeating Assassin, Saber uses her Excalibur to destroy the incomplete Grail and disappears after exhausting all her mana. Shirou is able to slice off Gilgamesh’s arm within Unlimited Blade Works, creating a void. Archer saves Shirou from Gilgamesh as the void sucks Gilgamesh in, defeating him for good. Finally, Rin and Archer say goodbye to one another. Archer tells her to watch over Shirou before he disappears.
