In this article, we’ll give a brief breakdown of all of these movies and how they relate to the very wide, very expansive, and often very confusing Fate series. Or to term differently, how they relate to the Nasuverse. If you have never heard of the term “Nasuverse,” then you indeed have a long way to go to learn everything about Fate, and the collection of articles on our site is a great place to start.

The first thing we should mention is that the list of movies posted here does not simply tell the events of one single timeline in a chronological order, the way, let’s say, all five Jurassic Park movies do. The way Fate works more closely resembles the long history of James Bond movies. In those films, Sean Connery played James Bond and Daniel Craig played the role as well, years later (along with many other actors). They are not usually described as taking place in different timelines, but we also don’t hear Craig’s Bond ever mention having fought Goldfinger, the villain from the Connery film. For all intents and purposes, Connery and Craig play different versions of the same character who have different life experiences. It’s not like Connery’s Bond is the grandfather of Craig’s Bond, with all Bond flicks taking place in one extremely long story.

The Fate franchise also utilizes alternate timelines, alternate universes, and different retellings of a single period in history to maintain core concepts and themes while still being allowed to introduce new characters and new scenarios. That said, we’ll try to mention when there is a continuity or connection between different anime works, like when a film relates to another film or a film continues the story of one of the many Fate television series, etc.

2010 - Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works
This 2010 movie tells the story adapted from one of the three narrative routes in the visual novel game, Fate/stay night. It is a stand alone movie that tells the story in its entirety. In it, Shirou Emiya, a teenaged boy, is the protagonist. His ally and romantic interest is Rin Tohsaka. In this story, Shirou Emiya in unexpectedly thrust into a battle royale called the Fifth Holy Grail War.

2017 - Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya Oath of Snow
Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya is an anime series with multiple seasons that tells the story of a parallel world to the one in Unlimited Blade Works. In this world, a girl named Illyasviel (Illya) is the main protagonist. In Oath of Snow, an alternate world version of Shirou Emiya (but not from the UBW world) recounts to Illya events he experienced. You don’t have to watch this movie to follow the events in the Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya anime series. And you don’t have to watch Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya to enjoy any of the Fate/stay night works.

2017 - Fate/stay night Heaven's Feel: I. Presage Flower
This movie is part of a trilogy, adapting a different route of the game Fate/stay night from Unlimited Blade Works. Just as in UBW, Shirou Emiya is the male protagonist. In this version of the Fifth Holy Grail War, Shirou’s romantic interest is Sakura Matou. This version of the Fate/stay night story has been described as darker and more horrific than the other two. As you might have guessed, you don’t need to watch the Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works movie from 2010 to follow and understand the events of this movie.

2019 - Fate/stay night Heaven's Feel: II. Lost Butterfly
This is the sequel to Presage Flower. In it, the Fifth Holy Grail War progresses and Shirou Emiya gets closer to Sakura Matou. Several characters die. You should watch Presage Flower before this.

2020 - Fate/Grand Order - The Sacred Round Table Realm Camelot- Wandering; Agateram
This movie takes place in the Fate/Grand Order universe in the Fate franchise, a timeline adapted from the hit mobile game with the same name. This movie is the first part of an event called the Sixth Singularity, or the Camelot storyline. To fully appreciate this story, you should probably also watch the anime set in the same universe called Fate/Grand Order - Absolute Demonic Babylonia Front: Babylonia. However, you don’t have to watch the aforementioned movies on this list to follow this story.

TBA - Fate/Grand Order -The Sacred Round Table Realm Camelot- Paladin; Agateram
The second part of the Camelot storyline. You should watch the anime, Fate/Grand Order - Absolute Demonic Babylonia Front: Babylonia and its prequel, Wandering; Agateram.
