Fate Anime Series on Netflix

Artoria Pendragon might be considered the King of Knights, and Gilgamesh might be crowned the King of Heroes, but in this age of on-demand movies and television series, Netflix is still King of Streaming. That’s why it makes perfect sense that dozens of high quality anime have found a home on the streaming platform over the last decade. The content hunters at Netflix have a knack of finding and acquiring stuff that people love to watch, can’t take their eyes off, and eat up like popcorn. They comb the whole world to get this binge-worthy content, so it was only a matter of time before they picked up some of the truly phenomenal animation produced and created by Japan. And at the top of that list is the Fate series, which has spawned more than half a dozen televised anime series to date. Unfortunately, only four of those series are currently available to watch on US Netflix (subbed or dubbed, your choice) as of January 2020. The four shows are as follows.

  • Fate/Zero
  • Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works
  • Fate/Extra Last Encore
  • Fate/Apocrypha

Of this list, Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works is the only sequel to Fate/Zero, and even then, Unlimited Blade Works is just one adaptation of three narrative routes detailing the same moment in history. The other routes that have been adapted, Fate/stay night and Fate/stay night: Heaven’s Feel, are NOT currently watchable on Netflix. Meanwhile, Fate/Extra Last Encore is set in an alternate reality from the Fate/stay night series, and Fate/Apocrypha is in yet another parallel world. So don’t worry too much about your Netflix view order, if you plan to watch all of these. The shows don’t all flow as one sequence of events like the three Star Wars trilogies do.

Fate/Zero Summary

Fate/Zero details the events of the Fourth Holy Grail War in Fuyuki City. The Holy Grail War is a ritual that was created by mage families. During the ritual, seven mages are called to the role of Master and each summons their own Heroic Spirit from history, known as Servants, as ultra powerful champions to fight against one another in a battle royale. The prize at the end is the Holy Grail, a device said to grant its winner any wish he or she desires. The main protagonist is the Master, Kiritsugu Emiya, who fights alongside his Servant, Saber. Through several deadly confrontations, Kiritsu works towards acquiring the Grail and achieving his wish.

Fate/Zero was produced by the animation studio, Ufotable, Inc. It was directed by Ei Aoki. The show is 25 episodes long divided by 2 seasons. The first cour’s OP theme is “oath sign” by LiSA, and it’s ED theme is “Memoria” by Eir Aoi. The second cour’s OP song is “to the beginning" by Kalafina, while the ED theme is “Up On the Sky, The Wind Sings" by Luna Haruna.

Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works Summary

Unlimited Blade Works is set 10 years after the Fourth Holy Grail War, and recounts the Fifth Holy Grail War. The last war ended with hundreds of people from Fuyuki City dead. One of the survivors was saved by Kiritsugu Emiya, and his name was Shirou. Kiritsugu adopted him, and 10 years later, by a strange twist of fate, he was called to be a Master to fight in the current Holy Grail War. Shirou is completely clueless about the War when he enters it, but he vows to end it without killing others. Joining him in the fight are Saber, Rin Tohsaka, and Rin’s Servant, Archer.

After Ufotable hit a homerun with their production of Fate/Zero, TYPE-MOON called on the studio again to produce Unlimited Blade Works in 2014. The series was directed by Takahiro Miura.

Studio Deen had already adapted this route into a full-length film back in 2010 that was met with mixed reviews. This time around, producer Atsuhiro Iwakami felt a full series would be a better way to present the story. Shirou Emiya’s characterization was modified from the original visual novel content.

Fate/Extra Last Encore Summary

The story is set in a virtual world, and the protagonist this time is an amnesiac boy named Hakuno Kishinami. Hakuno must fight in a Holy Grail War, something he has no ideas about, to escape. He teams up with the Saber Servant, Nero Claudius. While characters similar to the ones in Fate/Stay Night appear in Last Encore, they possess major differences from their counterparts.

Fate/Extra Last Encore originally aired early 2018. It was directed by Yukihiro Miyamoto and Akiyuki Shinbo, produced by Shaft, and loosely based on the game with the same name. It ran for ten episodes.

Fate/Apocrypha Summary

The Einzbern Family breaks the rules of the Holy Grail ritual during the Third Holy Grail War, and the Greater Grail was taken to Romania. Now, two sides, the Black Faction and the Red Faction, fight for the Grail. Each side has summoned seven Servants, making the total number 14. And a Ruler Servant was called on as a 15th Servant to preside over this war, which became known as the “Great Holy Grail War.”

This series was directed by Yoshiyuki Asai and produced by A-1 Pictures.
