Lancer (Cú Chulainn) - Fate

What series is Cú Chulainn in?

Cú Chulainn, also known Ireland’s Child of Light, is portrayed in the Fate anime Fate/stay night (Lancer) , Fate/Prototype (Lancer), Fate/hollow ataraxia (Lancer) and Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya (Lancer), as well as the games Fate/Extra (Lancer) and Fate/Grand Order (Caster or Berserker Alter).

In Fate/Prototype he fought in the Second Holy Grail War for his Master Misaya Reiroukan as a Lancer. In Fate/Zero he fought in the Fourth Holy Grail War for his Master Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald as a Lancer. In Fate/stay night he fought in the Fifth Holy Grail War first for his Master Bazett Fraga McRemitz and then Kirei Kotomine as a Lancer. He also appears in Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆IIllya as a Lancer-class Card used during the Fifth Ainsworth Holy Grail War.

He is able to be summoned as a Caster or Berserker Alter in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order by the Protagonist and is an enemy Servant of Rin Tohsaka in Fate/Extra for the Moon Cell Holy Grail War as a Lancer.

What does Cú Chulainn mean?

In Irish Galeic Cú Chulainn means “Culann’s savage dog” in praise of his strength for killing a guard dog as strong as 10 men in his first fight ever as a child using his bare hands only when he was attacked.

What is the Gáe Bolg?

The Gáe Bolg is a cursed spear which he obtained from Scáthach in the Land of Shadow. It has two Noble Phantasm - Anti-Unit thrusting and Anti-Army throwing. The wounds it creates are also cursed and will not heal unless Lancer is killed or the spear is destroyed. It can be used to perform the special attacks which are outlined below.

  • Barbed Spear that Pierces with Death: This thrusting attack always penetrates the opponents heart killing them from within with its thousand iron thorns by reversing the nature of causality. The cause of the spear being thrust is it having already pierced the opponents heart. It can move at impossible angles to reach the heart by turning into a red beam of light. The damage it inflicts is equal to the opponent’s own health limit plus the damage from the spear itself. Because it can never be dodged the defender must be lucky enough to alter fate or known to back out of its range before it is initialized. It can be defended against with Divine protection, an auto-resurrection ability, and a powerful enough shield.
  • Gáe Bolg: Soaring Spear that Strikes with Death: This is a throwing attack that can hit up to 50 people. It consumes all of Lancer’s magical energy to distort space creating a “tapestry of action” which splits the spearheads and sends them raining down on enemies. It cannot normally be dodged or blocked.
  • Gáe Bolg: Gouging Piercing Spear of Carnage: This is a throwing attack similar to Soaring Spear that Strikes with Death but instead of raining spears it becomes a homing magic spear missile that can hit up to 100 people which causes instant death or great damage if avoided.

The Gáe Bolg: Piercing Crimson Lance is the spear of lancer from Fate/Prototype which is also called the Gáe Bolg Origin to distinguish it from the Gáe Bolg.
