Background

Also known simply as “Illya” Illyasviel von Einzbern is the daughter of Kiritsugu Emiya and Irisviel von Einzbern. She was prepared by her family the Einzberns to be a living vessel for the Grail also known as a homunculus. Though she is an artificial human, her mother Irisviel von Einzbern (also a homunculus) was given a womb so that she could carry her to term and give birth to her. She is also a Vessel of the Grail. When her body is destroyed she will become the Holy Grail.

Appearance

Illya has long white hair and red eyes. She doesn't age as a normal human because of the immense amount of magical circuits in her body (70%). They were added before and after her birth through painful procedures. Because of all this she will never go through puberty. She looks the same at 18 as she looked at 8 years old.

In Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya she looks the same physically but wears several different casual outfits including her school uniforms and Magical Girl outfits. She is also able to obtain cosmic wings.

Personality

Illya has two sides to her personality which can be compared to her parents. On the outside, she seems like her mother Irisviel von Einzbern who was positive, cheerful, and friendly. On the inside he is more like her father taking on his attributes of being callous, remorseless, and unstable. She is lonely because she is kept in the Einzbern castle and doesn’t have any friends. Her heart is also scarred by her father abandoning her by him abandoning the grail as well as his decision to adopt and raise another child, Shirou Emiya. However her father did make attempts to reach her, but the magical field around the castle was never let down by Jubstacheit, Illya’s grandfather. She feels somewhat jealous of Shirou but eventually becomes close to him.

In Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya she is a fan of anime, cute things like stuffed toys, and animals. She starts the series out being shy but matures over the series though she is still susceptible to tantrums. She is often the moral compass of her friends.

Abilities

She is the strongest Master of all past and present because her body is made up of 70% Magical Circuits. This enables her to use her Command Spells on Berserker Hercules who would normally be able to ignore them. Her Magic Circuits glow throughout her body from face down her legs. She also has an unlimited supply of mana. She is also one of the best mages. She can also create autonomous beings that defend her and pursue targets even being able to shoot at them. The ability is called Engel Note: Angel’s Poem.

In Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya she can wield Kaleidosticks (Magical Ruby and Magical Sapphire) which give her different abilities. She can also wield them at the same time. She is also able to induce and install Class Cards. She is immune to brainwashing. She can easily make friends with her enemies.

What is a Homunculus?

Homunculus are a type of being that was created through magic rather than natural methods. All the information they receive is known at birth and they mature into their adult bodies far more rapidly than humans. They possess a powerful Magic Circuit which gives them special powers humans do not have. In a way, some of the Einzbern Homunculus are the same being because they share the same memories as Justeaze. The Einzberns are not the only mages to create Homunculus.

Roles

Fate/Zero
Illyasviel has a minor part in Fate/Zero, she is shown playing with her father Kiritsugu Emiya and him as well as her mother Illyasviel think about her often throughout the entire series and see her in visions.

Fate/stay night
Angra Mainyu, appearing as a shadowy form of her dead mother, seeded hatred and resentment into her heart for her father Kiritsugu Emiya and his adoptive son Shirou Emiya.
She is the Master of Berserker (Hercules).
・Fate
She starts out not liking Shirou Emiya because of his connection to her father Kiritsugu Emiya’s betrayal when he tries to destroy the Holy Grail. But through events in the series ends up in his household and even becoming somewhat attached to him. It is said she somehow manages to live out a full lifespan.
・Unlimited Blade Works
She has a smaller role in the “Unlimited Blade Works” route as compared to “Fate.” She dies shortly into the storyline at the hand of Gilgamesh.
・Heaven’s Feel
She plays a larger part in this series. She still has it out for Shirou, but eventually forms a friendly relationship with him. She helps Rin prepare to fight Sakura. There are a couple endings to the game including a bad ending where she kills Shirou or Sakura’s True Ending which she sacrifices herself in to save him.
