Overview

Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel is originally one of the narrative routes of the Fate/stay night eroge visual novel created by TYPE-MOON. It has been hailed as the deepest and most complex of the routes, sharing more about the lore regarding the Holy Grail War, as well information not shared in the other routes. Some also consider it the darkest of the routes in regard to its tone, containing more of a horror element.

The story of Heaven’s Feel has been adapted into a trilogy of feature films made by the studio, Ufotable and produced by Aniplex. The first part, Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel - I. Presage Flower was theatrically released in Japan on October 14, 2017. The second part, Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel - II. Lost Butterfly was released on January 12, 2019. The third and final installment of the story, Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel - III. Spring Song, is set to be released on March 28, 2020.

Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel - I. Presage Flower Synopsis

The story begins at the start of the Fifth Holy Grail War. The Holy Grail is a prize that grants its winner any wish he desires. Ten years earlier, the fallout of the Fourth Holy Grail War left Fuyuki City destroyed, taking the lives of hundreds of people.

Shirou Emiya is a survivor of that disaster. Kiritsugu Emiya, the man who found Shirou in the wreckage of Fuyuki City and adopted him, was a mage. Kiritsugu passed away but taught Shirou an amateur level of magecraft before he died. Now a teenager, he becomes friends with his classmate named Sakura Matou. Sakura, along with his teacher, Taiga Fujimura, regularly spends time with Shirou in his home.

One day, Shirou encounters a battle between two Heroic Spirits, Lancer and Archer, at his school. Lancer attacks Shirou but he is saved by another Heroic Spirit, Saber. She proclaims that Shirou is her Master and she is his Servant. All of this is unusual and unbelievable to Shirou. His classmate, Rin Tohsaka, is also present at this battle. She is Archer’s Master. She takes Shirou to Kirei Kotomine, a priest and overseer of the Fifth Holy Grail War. He explains to Shirou that this is a battle royale between seven mages and their respective Servants, and that Shirou is a participant in the War and a challenger to receive the Grail.

After learning this information, Shirou and Rin meet Illyasviel von Einzbern, another mage and Master to Berserker. Illyasviel has Berserker attack Saber, but Shirou is able to defend Saber and Illyasviel leaves the battle in a draw. Some time later, Rin and Shirou learn that Shinji Matou, another one of their classmates and Sakura’s half brother, is the Master of Rider. Because Shinji is using Rider to suck the life out of his classmate, Saber defeats Rider. This results in Zouken, Shinji’s grandfather, to be disappointed in him. Not long after this, Rin and Shirou learn that innocent people are dying because of the Servant Caster. But Caster, her Master, Souichirou Kuzuki, and Assassin are killed by the True Assassin at their base, Ryuudou Temple.
Rin and Shirou then meet Zouken, who is controlling the corpse of Caster. A shadow devours Caster, causing Zouken to retreat. The shadow also goes after Rin, but Shirou protects her and is injured in the process. While Shirou is healing, Lancer tries to find the True Assassin but is instead devoured by the shadow. Shirou then learns from Kirei that Lancer was his Servant and that he was killed by the shadow.

Finally, a confrontation occurs between Shirou/Saber, Zouken, True Assassin, Rider, and the shadow at Ryuudou Temple. Saber allows herself to be devoured by the shadow and meets a dark version of herself. Meanwhile Rin and Archer learn the Matou home is filled with Crest Worms. Zouken himself is a swarm of Crest Worms who feed on living humans to stay alive. Shirou returns to his home and is cared for by Sakura.

Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel - II. Lost Butterfly Synopsis

In part 2 of the story, Sakura Matou is kidnapped by her brother, Shinji, leading to a confrontation between Masters. The conflict causes Sakura to reveal herself as the true Master of Rider, taking control of Rider away from Shinji. Rider (Medusa) nearly succeeds in turning Rin and Archer into stone for attacking Sakura, but Sakura’s love for Shirou causes her to injure herself and stop the attack.

Afterwards at the church, Kirei Kotomine speaks to Shirou, who has regained consciousness from the previous battle. Kirei explains that Zouken’s Crest Worms are feeding on her from inside her body. Although Rin thinks Sakura is a threat, Shirou promises to protect her. Sakura and Rider move into the Emiya home.

Shirou and Rin want to form an alliance with Illyasviel von Einzbern, but she is occupied fighting against Zouken, Assassin, corrupted Saber and the shadow. Berserker and Archer lose their lives in the battle, but Archer is able to save Shirou’s before he dies by sacrificing his own arm to replace Shirou’s severed one. After, Rin and Illya move into the Emiya home.

Shirou later discovers that the shadow comes from Sakura, and Sakura killed people and Gilgamesh while sleepwalking. Zouken explains to Shirou that the shadow was a part of the Holy Grail from the previous war that he sealed inside Sakura. The only way to destroy the shadow is to kill her, but Shirou refuses. Not wanting to cause Shirou harm, Sakura moves back to the Matou home. The torment from Shinji (who has raped Sakura for years) causes Sakura to kill her brother. This event leads her to merge with the shadow.

Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel - III. Spring Song Synopsis

Fate/stay night: Heaven’s Feel 3 will come out in theaters on March 28, 2020.
