Waver Velvet - Fate

Background

Waver Velvet became an orphan when both of his parents died when he was young. His mother knew a little about Magecraft because her mother had learned a bit of it from her lover while they were dating. His mother only learned it out of respect for her mother (Waver’s grandmother), so she didn’t know much and she also wasn’t a fan of the Mage Association’s belief that strong magical bloodlines were of utmost importance in regard to the quality of a mage. She was disapproving of Waver’s desire to attend the Clock Tower for formal training and mentorship, but when both his parents passed away he decided to sell all their belongings he was left with in order to fund his education there. He was met with students and professors, most notably Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald, who saw him as magical inferior to his peers because of his weak magical bloodline. He once prepared a paper against the necessity of long and strong magical background, but it was ridiculed by Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald in front of his peers during a lecture. This greatly motivated Waver Velvet into participating in the Fourth Holy Grail War of Fate/Zero in an effort to prove himself to the Clock Tower members and his peers.

After the Fourth Holy Grail War he takes what he has learned from the experience and his friendship with his Servant Rider to study magical fundamentals diligently and eventually becomes a well-respected professor of third year students. He wishes to continue rising within the ranks of the Clock Tower but because of his mediocrity as a Magus he remains only a teacher, though a great and respected one despite that not mattering to him because it wasn’t his ultimate goal and desire.

Why does Waver Velvet adopt the name “El-Melloi” to his?

Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald is killed in the Fourth Holy Grail War of Fate/Zero which left his magical research suddenly abandoned. Waver decides to take his research and compile them into Lord Kayneth’s Encyclopedia of Arcane Secrets. This act prevents the downfall of the El-Melloi family and restores it so it can continue on respectfully. Once Reines El-Melloi Archisorte acknowledges his acts and is made aware of his part in the death of Kayneth she says he is forever in his debt and he adopts El-Melloi into his name.

Appearance

Waver Velvet is 19 years old when he participates in the Fourth Holy Grail War of Fate/Zero. He is light skinned, has black straight shoulder length hair, and green eyes. He isn’t strong physically because he has prided himself over improving his intellect rather than his physique so he is quite weak and lanky. He is often dressed in his uniform which consists of a black v-neck sweater with a white collared shirt underneath and striped blue and yellow tie. His pants are also black and have thin vertical stripes. He wears brown loafers. He also has a brown strap on his side likely for his wallet. His backpack is blue with reddish brown stripes.

As an adult he has longer hair that reaches just about past his collar bones. His facial features are a bit sharper and his expression is more often a glare with his eyebrows furrowed. He is seen either wearing black pants with a black button up T-shirt, black gloves, brown jacket, red scarf draped over it, and a black scarf tied around his neck with shiny black boots or sometimes with a red coat, gold draping over it, black T-shirt, dark grey button up vest, dark gray pants, and dark boots.

Personality

In his youth Waver was frustrated about the Clock Tower not recognizing his genius, but at the same time doubted himself. His experiences in the Fourth Holy Grail War of Fate/Zero humbled him and his friendship with Rider helped improve his confidence. This changes his personality enough to enable him to take the time to learn magical basics and eventually become a well-respected Clock Tower professor. His nearly constant scowling expression is likely due to his inability to rise within the ranks of the Clock Tower because of his continued mediocrity as a magus. Though he becomes a great professor, that doesn’t satisfy him. He doesn’t have an interest in his students or their lives. Interestingly, he continues to play video games in his past time which he picked up at the end of Fate/Zero when he played Admiral Tactics a game purchased by Rider to play with him that he initially scoffed at but was left in his room after Rider’s death.
