Synopsis

There exists in the world demons called Curses who feed on unsuspecting humans and search for fragments of the legendary demon Ryoumen Sukuna which are cursed items scattered around the world. Should a demon consume the fragments they would gain enough power to destroy the world!

Yuuji Itadori is a high schooler who joins the Occult Research Club at his school in an effort not to join the track team even though he has exceptional physical fitness and excels at sports. One day, the club unknowingly unseals one of the cursed fragments, attracting Curses to their school. With his friends’ lives in danger, Yuuji consumes the fragment to gain the magic power of Sukuna and save his friends, but he ends up becoming cursed himself! Eventually he is able to regain control over his body despite the curse, but he now carries a death sentence because of it. Instead of being exercised right away, he is tasked with finding and consuming all of the fragments so that Sukuna can be killed once and for all.

Background

Jujutsu Kaisen began as a manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami that has been serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine since March 2018. Two light novel adaptations by Ballad Kitaguni have also been published: Jujutsu Kaisen: Soaring Summer and Returning Autumn in May 2019 and Jujutsu Kaisen: The Path of Roses at Dawn in January 2020.

The anime adaptation was announced in the 52nd issue of Weekly Shonen Jump published on Nov. 25, 2019. The anime is being produced by MAPPA with Sung Hoo Park directing, Hiroshi Seko composing the series and writing the scripts, Tadashi Hiramatsu designing the characters, and Arisa Okehazama, Hiroaki Tsutsumi, and Yoshimasa Terui composing the music. The anime premiered in Japan on MBS and TBS on Oct. 3, 2020 during the Super Animeism programming block. It is being streamed overseas by Crunchyroll and will run for 24 episodes.

Characters

Yuuji Itadori Voiced by: Junya Enoki)
Yuuji is a 15-year-old high school student and athlete who joins the Occult Research Club to get out of joining the track team. After opening a box containing a cursed finger, his school is attacked by demonic creatures known as Curses. After he ingests the finger in order to save his friends, he becomes possessed by a Curse known as Ryoumen Sukuna. He goes on to join the Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical College under the tutelage of Satoru Gojo.

Megumi Fushiguro Voiced by: Yuma Uchida)
Megumi is a sorcerer and first-year student studying under Satoru Gojo at the Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical College. He meets Yuuji while searching for the cursed item at the high school and convinces Satoru to save Yuuji from execution. He has a curse power that lets him create spirits out of his shadows to fight against and exorcise Curses.

Nobara Kugisaki Voiced by: Asami Seto)
Nobara is a sorcerer and first-year student studying under Satoru Gojo at the Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical College. She meets Yuuji and Megumi during her first mission. She uses a hammer and nails infused with her curse power to exorcise Curses.

Satoru Gojo Voiced by: Yuichi Nakamura)
Satoru is a sorcerer and teacher at the Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical College who teaches Yuuji, Megumi, and Nobara. He convinces his superiors to keep Yuuji alive after he is possessed by Sukuna so that Yuuji can consume all of Sukuna’s fingers, giving them a chance to kill Sukuna once and for all. He is widely respected as one of the most powerful sorcerers alive.

Sukuna is a high-level Curse who is called the “King of Curses.” In ancient times, sorcerers were unable to fully exorcise him so they instead cut off his 20 fingers and hid them away as cursed items hoping that one day they would all be destroyed and Sukuna would be defeated once and for all.
