Synopsis

Everyone is familiar with the story of Sherlock Holmes - but what about his long-standing rival Moriarty? Moriarty the Patriot tells an equally compelling story with Moriarty as the protagonist, in London during the Golden Age of Britain. Rather than solving mysteries, Moriarty uses his sharp intellect to formulate a plan to improve the state of London.

Background

Moriarty the Patriot is a mystery manga series written by Ryosuke Takeuchi and illustrated by Hikaru Miyoshi based on the Sherlock Holmes series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle that began serialization in Shueisha's Jump Square magazine in August 2016.

The anime adaptation was announced at the Jump Festa '20 event in December 2019. It is being produced by Production I.G and features Kazuya Nomura as director, Go Zappa and Taku Kishimoto as series composers, Tooru Ookubo as character designer and chief animation director, and Asami Tachibana as music composer. The anime premiered in Japan on Oct. 11, 2020 on Tokyo MX. It will run for two split cours with the second half of the anime scheduled to premiere in April 2021. It is available to stream in North America through Funimation.

Characters

William James Moriarty (Voiced by: Soma Saito, Shizuka Ishigami (young))
The second son of the Moriarty family, William has excelled at math since he was a child and currently works as a math professor and a private advisor. He also works as a crime counselor trying to break down London’s corrupt class system.

Albert James Moriarty (Voiced by: Takuya Sato)
The eldest son of the Moriarty family, Albert adopted the orphans William and Louis into the family. He is a member of the army who uses his position to assist William.

Louis James Moriarty (Voiced by: Chiaki Kobayashi, Nao Toyama (young))
The third son of the Moriarty family, Louis has admired William from a young age and stays close to him. He is currently in charge of managing the Moriarty family’s territory and working on the mansion.

Sherlock Holmes (Voiced by: Makoto Furukawa)
Sherlock is a great detective with outstanding deductive reasoning skills who is able to solve many cases others cannot. He tends to get absorbed in his mysteries.

John H. Watson (Voiced by: Yuki Ono)
John is a former surgeon who served during the Afghan War. He is roommates with Sherlock and also accompanies him on his investigations to offer support.

Fred Porlock (Voiced by: Yuto Uemura)
Fred is an information broker who is highly intelligent and has a criminal network throughout the UK. He also helps William in his crime consultation work.

Sebastian Moran (Voiced by: Satoshi Hino)
Sebastian is William’s right-hand man who has pledged his absolute loyalty to him. He has an artificial right hand from being injured during his time as a sniper in the Afghan War.
