Summary

Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru is known as one of the songs that represent the sudden popularity spike of Hatsune Miku. According to an October 2008 survey conducted by iShare, 69.2% of respondents answered that they had listened to this Hatsune Miku song in particular, which was the highest number of respondents.

It was not originally made as a short version, and a full version of the song was released in 2009 on the album "Heartsnative" and again in 2012's "Heartsnative2". The full version of the song was titled, "Minna Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru", or "I'll Miku-Miku Everyone♪ (For Reals)".
The version on the 2009 album does not have Hatsune Miku sing by herself. Rather, it is a collaborative effort with Hatsune Miku and MOSAIC.WAV singing together as a duet. It was featured as the opening song for the CD and was the only high-profile Vocaloid song, with other songs on the CD being lesser-known.

Success on Nico Nico Douga

The song was uploaded on September 20, 2007, to Nico Nico Douga and helped create a spike in popularity (boom) for Hatsune Miku. It received an overwhelmingly positive response from viewers and fans alike, and had exceeded 500,000 views after 8 days of posting. Additionally, there was a period where it was the most-watched video on the website. On August 30, 2012, the song was the 6th to reach 10 million views on Nico Nico Douga, the first time a Vocaloid song has done so.

Many users have reacted by posting their own videos to Nico Nico Douga or reusing previously published videos, and derivative works of the song have proven very popular such as 3D animated videos, covers by popular video creators, and versions of the song exist where its lyrics are rewritten in a Kagoshima, Kobe, and even Hiroshima dialect.

JASRAC Backlash

Smartphone app Chaku-Uta (着うた) had used the song and claimed it would be paying royalties to the song's creator, and in December 2007, Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (JASRAC) was given copyright to the song by Dwango Music Publishing, a subsidiary of Dwango, which owns Nico Nico Douga. However, fans became furious at not being able to cover the song online for fear of breaching copyright. The song had a wide range of reuploads and there were concerns about licensing procedures and usage fees. Additionally, it was revealed that Dwango Music Publishing had registered the song with its rights without the permission of Crypton Future Media, the developers of Hatsune Miku, and the creator of the song himself.

Dwango Music Publishing apologized for the issue, claiming there was a miscommunication and corrected the mistake. The song was then able to be covered for the purposes of uploading the audio to the Internet.
