About the Artist
Nayutalien is a self-proclaimed alien from "the planet Nayutan". Nayutalien debuted on July 1, 2015, releasing "Andromeda Andromeda". This song was breaking the mold of the Vocaloid scene at the time. Nayutalien's Vocaloid songs are space and science fiction-themed, and his composition style tends to create short and catchy melodies, songs with high tension and adrenaline. In general, Nayutalien tends to create music that falls between 165-180 beats per minute (BPM). This is considerably faster than many of Hatsune Miku's more popular songs (Matryoshka aside) but this hasn't wavered his popularity at all, and many of his songs are wildly successful in karaoke booths.
The characters in his music videos are drawn by Nayutalien himself, their nicknames, given by fans, are "Andromeda Girl" and "Andromeda Boy”. In his music videos, 2D images of the characters are flipped in sync to the music, creating a dance-like effect to the visuals which, while simple, is captivating and memorable. His first album, Nayutansei kara no Buttai X (Object from Planet Nayutan X) was released in July 2016, and his second and third albums, which have the same name except for the final alphabet, which are changed into, respectively, “Y” and “Z”, were then released in January 2017 and August 2018.
Nayutalien exclusively uses Hatsune Miku's voice for his Vocaloid songs.
In 2018, in an interview with Music Natalie, a Japanese entertainment news website, Nayutalien answered some questions, further revealing his background and thoughts concerning the Vocaloid scene. While in the interview he talked in-character, pretending to be an alien, the transcript of the interview below sheds some light on their background.
Q: Your first upload on Nico Nico Douga was in July 2015, but did you use Nico Nico even before that?
A: I’d been watching Nico Nico not only before Miku started being popular, but since about right after it was founded.
Q: Andromeda Andromeda was uploaded in a time period in which interest in Vocaloid was at an all-time low. Why did you start uploading when things were like that?
A: I uploaded it when I had bought a PC which allowed me to compose, which was in 2015, nothing particular there. And “all-time low interest” is an analysis one would make from the outside, to me, the interest never waned. If anything, the amount of songs which were played a million times decreased in amount.
Q: Did anything unexpected happen in your three years of activity?
A: To be honest, I didn’t expect this many people to listen to my songs. I received requests to compose songs from other, I didn’t expect that I’d compose songs for others. So it was fun, to not only produce the songs I had already planned, but also songs which go along with the requests of others.
Speaking of which, it was surprising to see you writing that you can’t play any instruments in one of your album’s liner notes.
A: I lived in a small house, so that also helped to make it difficult to have any chances to play instruments. Many people were surprised by that. Recently I finally got an environment that would allow me to practice playing instruments, but I end up doing what I’m used to anyway, clicking away on my PC and creating songs with my mouse.
