Synopsis

Taking place in the year 300 of the Era of the Gods, Yuna Yuki, Mimori Togo, Fu Inubozaki, and Itsuki Inubozaki are members of the Sanshu Middle School Hero Club who dedicate themselves to helping those in need. One day, they are suddenly transported to a strange forest, where they encounter mysterious creatures called “Vertex” and are given special magical abilities. Now, it’s up to Yuna and her friends to fight back against the Vertex to protect the Shinju, the guardian deity which protects and blesses humanity, and their world from destruction!

Background

Yuki Yuna is a Hero is a mixed-media franchise that to date includes light novels, manga, games, and anime. The first season of the anime aired from October to December 2014 and spanned 12 episodes. The second season was split into two parts: the Washio Sumi Chapter, which covered the events of the light novel Washio Sumi is a Hero, and the Hero Chapter, which continues on from the events of the first season. The Washio Sumi Chapter was first released theatrically in Japan as three parts before being broadcast on TV in seven episodes from October to November 2017. The second part of the season, Hero Chapter, spans six episodes and was aired from November 2017 to January 2018. A short anime titled Yuki Yuna is a Hero: Churutto!, which was a tie-in to the smartphone game Yuki Yuna wa Yusha de Aru Hanayui no Kirameki, aired from April to June 2021.

Yuki Yuna is a Hero: The Great Mankai Chapter is the third season of the TV anime adaptation. Along with the short anime Churutto!, it is being produced to celebrate the series’ fifth anniversary. It is once again being animated by Studio Gokumi and sees returning staff including Seiji Kishi as director, Makoto Uezu as series composer, Takahiro Sakai as character designer and chief animation director, and Keiichi Okabe and MONACA composing the music. The anime’s opening and ending theme songs are "Ashita no Hanatachi" and "Chiheisen no Muko e", both of which are being performed by the vocal unit by Sanshu Chugaku Yushabu comprised of the six main cast members including Haruka Terui, Suzuko Mimori, Yumi Uchiyama, Tomoyo Kurosawa, Juri Nagatsuma, and Kana Hanazawa. The anime will premiere in Japan Oct. 1, 2021 on TBS, MBS, and BS-TBS.

Characters

Yuna Yuki (Voiced by: Haruka Terui)
The main character of the Yuki Yuna Is a Hero series. She is always positive and can be counted on in times of crisis, and is highly regarded by everyone. Her special skill is martial arts, which she learned from her parents.

Mimori Togo (Voiced by: Suzuko Mimori)
Yuna's classmate and best friend. They often go out together since they live next door to each other. She is elegant and calm, but she is also multi-talented in a variety of areas including computers and making sweets. She sometimes shows a dark side.

Fu Inubozaki (Voiced by: Yumi Uchiyama)
The president of the Hero Club. She has an easy-going personality and is an older sister type whose charisma attracts others to her. She can't help but love her younger sister, Itsuki. She is good at housework and is a good cook. She also eats a lot.

Itsuki Inubozaki (Voiced by: Tomoyo Kurosawa)
Fu's younger sister. She often behaves like a small animal and tends to hide behind her sister, but as the only first-year student in the Hero Club, she works hard every day. Her hobby is fortune-telling, especially tarot, and she has a reputation for being quite accurate.

Karin Miyoshi (Voiced by: Juri Nagatsuma)
A talented hero who transfers into Yuna’s class. Although capable, she is very prideful, hates to lose, and isn’t good at socializing.

Sonoko Nogi (Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa)
A previous generation hero. She is a cheerful and laid-back person who loves to relax.

Sumi Washio (Voiced by: Suzuko Mimori)
The main character of Washio Sumi is a Hero. She is a serious and reliable person who doesn’t bend once she decides on something. She believes in protecting the country and is passionate about her mission. She is also family-oriented and is good at cooking and making Japanese sweets. Her weapon is a bow and arrow.

Gin Minowa (Voiced by: Yumiri Hanamori)
An energetic firecracker. She has bad luck and runs into trouble all the time, but she doesn't give up. She loves her family and enjoys taking care of her newborn brother. Her weapon of choice is a high-powered double axe, which she uses as a vanguard.

Wakaba Nogi (Voiced by: Ayaka Ohashi)
The main character of Nogi Wakaba is a Hero. She has an extremely serious personality and believes in rewarding kindness and mercy and retaliating when attacked. She has a dignified appearance that attracts many fans, but her naivete sometimes makes her an easy target for lies.

Tamako Doi (Voiced by: Kaede Hondo)
A mischievous and restless girl. She is always on the lookout for enemies and makes those around her nervous. She and Anzu, a junior member of the team, hit it off right away and are as close as sisters.

Anzu Iyojima (Voiced by: Reina Kondo)
She loves to read so much that she always has a book in her hands. She is especially fond of romance novels and often cries when she reads them. She is clearly physically weaker than other heroes, but she tries her best to be useful any way she can.

Chikage Kori (Voiced by: Aina Suzuki)
She used to be bullied and had no friends because of her shy personality, but after she was chosen as a hero, those around her started treating her differently. She is attracted by Yuna’s cheerful personality and opens up to her.

Yuna Takashima (Voiced by: Haruka Terui)
She is cheerful and full of energy, and is the moodmaker of the team. She is sensitive to the feelings of others and cares about her surroundings. She is proud to have been chosen and throws herself into the apocalyptic war. There are many mysteries about her personal life.

Hinata Uesato (Voiced by: Marika Kono)
A shrine maiden and Wakaba’s childhood friend. She has a caring personality and often takes care of Wakaba. She is good at cleaning Wakaba's ears. She is often asked if she is really the same age as Wakaba.

Utano Shiratori (Voiced by: Ayaka Suwa)
A brave hero who single-handedly protects the Suwa region. She has a cheerful personality and likes to show off. She is completely addicted to agriculture. Her dream is to become the king of agriculture. She fights with a weapon that contains the same spiritual power as the wisteria vine, a weapon used by the god who rules Suwa.

Mito Fujimori (Voiced by: Maria Naganawa)
A girl who has awakened the power of a shrine maiden and can hear the voice of God. She receives an oracle and supports the hero Utano. Her personality is almost the opposite of Utano’s, and she is somewhat negative.

Mebuki Kusunoki (Voiced by: Minami Tanaka)
A strong-minded and serious girl. Thanks to her hard-working and competitive nature, she is able to handle any task with ease. She is a responsible leader of the defenders.

Aya Kokudo (Voiced by: Yuko Ono)
A first-year junior high school shrine maiden who grew up in a devout Shinju household. She has a very pure personality and is a refreshing influence on Mabuki's team. She has a very pure personality and is a refreshing influence on Mebuki's team.

Suzume Kagajo (Voiced by: Atsumi Tanezaki)
A second-year junior high school student who lacks confidence in herself. She has a negative personality and is reluctant to step forward, and is left to defend herself in battle. She has a cunning personality and tries to get the heroes to protect her.

Yumiko Miroku (Voiced by: Naomi Ozora)
A third-year junior high school student. She is very prideful and has a desire to stand out. Her determination to succeed is stronger than anyone else's, but she is also a bit of a klutz.

Shizuku Yamabushi (Voiced by: Shizuka Ishigami)
A second-year junior high school student who has grown up in a complicated family environment and speaks very little. It is very difficult to read what she is thinking. During battle, she sometimes changes into Shizuku, who has a winning personality.
