Banished from the Heroes' Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside

Synopsis

Red is an adventurer born with the protection of the “Guide,” which gives him +30 to his level. After being recruited by a knight order and rising in the ranks, he finds out that his sister Ruti is a hero and forms a party with her and other adventurers. Their goal: to defeat the Demon Lord’s army. However, after the rest of his party catches up to him in level, he quickly becomes the weakest link due to not having any magical abilities and is kicked out of the party. After arriving in the remote land of Zoltan, he makes use of the knowledge he gained during his time as a hero and saves up enough money to open his own apothecary. However, shortly after opening the store, a blast from the past arrives in the form of former party member Rit, who decides to move in with him!

Background

Banished from the Heroes' Party began as a light novel series written by Zappon and illustrated by Yasumo that was first serialized on the user-generated novel publishing website Shosetsuka ni Naro beginning in October 2017. The series was later picked up by Kadokawa Shoten, who have published it under their Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko imprint since June 2018. As of March 2021, nine volumes have been published. It has also been acquired for English release in North America by Yen Press, who has published four volumes as of September 2021.

A manga adaptation illustrated by Masahiro Ikeno began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten’s Monthly Shonen Ace shonen manga magazine in May 2018. As of June 2021, six collected tankobon volumes have been published. As with the novel, the manga has also been acquired for English release in North America by Yen Press, the first volume of which will be published in January 2022.

A TV anime adaptation was announced in November 2020. It is being jointly animated by Wolfsbane and Studio Flad and features Makoto Hoshino as director, with Megumi Shimizu handling series composition, Ruriko Watanabe handling character designs, Yoshinori Iwanaga handling monster designs, and Yukari Hashimoto composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is "Iki o Su Koko de Su Ikiteku" by Yui Nishio, and the ending theme song is "All the Same" by JYOCHO. The anime will premiere in Japan on Oct. 6, 2021 on Tokyo MX, AT-X, and other channels. It will also be streamed as part of Funimation’s 2021 fall lineup.

Characters

Red (Voiced by: Ryota Suzuki)
The protagonist. His real name is Gideon Ragnason. He is a D-rank adventurer from the nearby town of Zoltan. Since being kicked out of his party, he makes a living gathering and selling herbs and hopes to one day open his own apothecary and live a quiet life. He is blessed with the sign of the “Guide,” which gives him +30 to his level, and he used to be a member of a party of heroes.

Rit (Voiced by: Kanon Takao)
The heroine. Her real name is Rizlet of Loggervia and she is the second princess of the Principality of Loggervia. She is also a B-rank adventurer with the title of Hero. She used to be in a party with Gideon, and after hearing about Red from the adventurer’s guild, she visits his apothecary, wondering if he is actually Gideon. She ends up moving in with him and helping out around the shop.

Ruti (Voiced by: Naomi Ozora)
Gideon’s younger sister who is blessed with the sign of the “Hero” and is destined to defeat the Demon Lord. Her sign grants her unimaginable power, but at the same time it limits her emotions and her very humanity itself, which are seen as being unnecessary for a hero.

Yarandrala (Voiced by: Sora Amamiya)
A fellow member of the Hero’s Party and close friend of Gideon’s, she is a high elf who was blessed with the sign of the “Forest Speaker.” Her sign allows her to speak to plants and ask for aid. When she hears that Ares kicked Gideon out of the party, she leaves to search for him.

Ares (Voiced by: Taku Yashiro)
A member of the Hero’s Party who is blessed with the sign of the “Leader.” He excels as a magician thanks to his magical aptitude and intellect, but he is also proud and ambitious. Jealous of Gideon, he kicks him out of the party and tells the others that he left on his own.

Theodora (Voiced by: Aya Uchida)
A member of the Hero’s Party who is blessed with the sign of the “Crusader.” She is a servant of the church of the Almighty Demis and an instructor in the Temple Knights’ spearman style. She is stoic, devout, and loyal to the church and its teachings. However, she secretly holds questions that she is determined to one day find answers to.

Danan (Voiced by: Kenta Miyake)
A member of the Hero’s Party who is blessed with the sign of the “Martial Artist.” He is from a village that was destroyed by the Demon Lord and joins the Hero’s Party, seeing it as the quickest way to defeat him. He is a weapon’s expert who admired Gideon’s skills as a strategist while he was in the party.

Tisse (Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya)
A petite girl with the sign of the “Assassin” who is a member of the assassin’s guild. She replaces Gideon’s spot in the Hero’s Party at Ares’ request. She fights alongside her spider partner, Uge Uge.

Albert (Voiced by: Kohei Amasaki)
One of the top-ranking B-rank adventurers in Zoltan. He looks down on Red, who is only a D-rank adventurer. He has the sign of the “Champion,” which allows him to overcome great obstacles to achieve amazing feats. He is acutely aware of his gifts and questions whether or not he is living up to them.

Gonze (Voiced by: Masahiro Yamanaka)
A half-elf carpenter who lives in Red’s neighborhood. He builds Red’s store as thanks for saving his nephew Tanta, whom he dotes on. He has a pleasant personality and is skilled in his craft.

Tanta (Voiced by: Yu Serizawa)
Gonze’s nephew. He suffers from an incurable disease that may one day take his eyesight. Red is quite fond of him and tries to cure his disease through medicinal herbs. Though he doesn’t yet know his sign, he wants to be a carpenter like Gonze.

Nao (Voiced by: Sora Tokui)
Gonze’s sister and Tanta’s mom. She has a bright and amiable personality, and cheers on Red and Rit’s relationship ever since they started living together. She likes visiting the sauna and drinking beer inside, but she is worried that the one she used to frequent run by Zeff isn’t doing well.

Mido (Voiced by: Takeru Mishina)
Nao’s husband and Tanta’s dad. He is a human who gave up adventuring for carpentry. Though not as skilled as Gonze, he is good with numbers and works well in a support role. Even Gonze speaks highly of him when he isn’t within earshot.

Megria (Voiced by: Nao Toyama)
A receptionist at the adventurer’s guild in Zoltan. She occasionally buys herbs from Red, whom she strongly trusts. However, she suspects that he is hiding the fact that he is actually a skilled knight.

Dir (Voiced by: Kentaro Tone)
An adventurer blessed with the sign of the “Fire Mage.” He once gave guidance to Albert when he was trying to defeat an owlbear that was abducting people. Gideon and Rit once met him during a battle against the Demon Lord’s army in Loggervia, though they don’t remember it.

Newman (Voiced by: Ken Uo)
A doctor from a clinic in Zoltan. He is blessed with the sign of “Fast Preparation” and is able to prepare any medicine in only an hour. He trusts Red, who helped him diagnose Tanta’s condition, and becomes a regular customer of his.

Stormthunder (Voiced by: Yoji Ueda)
A half-orc craftsman who runs the furniture shop in downtown Zoltan. He and Red are generally on good terms. A fine craftsman, he is normally stubborn and prideful of his work, but quickly becomes a consummate salesman whenever a rich customer comes in.
