Synopsis

A broke 34-year-old virgin NEET is kicked out of his house, only to be killed when he’s run over by a truck! Despite all odds, he wakes up as a baby in a world where swords and magic reign free. Now named Rudeus, he’s determined to use his memories of his past life to take this second chance seriously and live so he’ll have no regrets. With a new talent for magic, he begins anew with a young traveling tutor and a beautiful half-elf to help him along.

Background

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is a light novel series written by Rifujin na Magonote
That was originally published on the user-generated web novel site Shosetsuka ni Naro starting in November 2012 before being published by Media Factory under their MF Books imprint beginning in January 2014. The series has received a manga adaptation illustrated by Yuka Fujikawa which premiered in the June 2014 issue of Monthly Comic Flapper. Both the light novel and manga have been licensed for release in English by Seven Seas Entertainment.

An anime adaptation was announced on the MF Books official site in March 2019. It is produced by EGG FIRM and animated by Studio Bind with Manabu Okamoto directing and writing the script, Hiroki Hirano credited as assistant director, Kazutaka Sugiyama handling character designs, Yoshiko Saito handling sub-character designs, and Yoshiaki Fujisawa composing the music. The opening and ending theme songs are "Tabibito no Uta" and "Only" by Yuiko Ohara. The anime was originally scheduled to premiere in 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It premiered on Jan. 10, 2021 on Tokyo MX, BS11, and other channels and was streamed online through Funimation (North America, the British Isles, Mexico, Brazil), Wakanim (Europe), and AnimeLab (Australia, New Zealand).

The anime’s second cour (second half) was announced after the conclusion of the first cour in March 2021. It is once again being produced by EGG FIRM and animated by Studio Bind and sees returning staff including Manabu Okamoto as director and scriptwriter, with Kazutaka Sugiyama and Mizuki Takahashi handling character designs, Yoshiko Saito handling sub-character designs, and Yoshiaki Fujisawa once again composing the music. Singer Yuiko Ohara will also return to sing the anime’s new opening theme song, "Keisho no Uta." The anime was originally scheduled to air beginning in July 2021 but was postponed due to various circumstances. It will now premiere in Japan on Oct. 3, 2021 on Tokyo MX, KBS Kyoto, and BS11 and will be streamed through Funimation as part of their fall lineup.

Characters

Rudeus Greyrat (Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita (former self), Yumi Uchiyama)
The protagonist of the series. His nickname is Rudy. He is reincarnated from modern-day Japan to the Kingdom of Asura in the village of Buena in the Fitoa region. In his previous life, he was bullied in high school and became a NEET until the age of 34 when he was kicked out of the house by his siblings after not attending his parents’ funeral. After being reincarnated, he regrets living half-heartedly in his past life and decides to take life seriously this time.

Roxy Migurdia (Voiced by: Konomi Kohara)
A sorceress of the demon tribe Migurdia. She has long blue hair that she styles in braided twintails and though she appears to be 14 she is actually 37. She is polite, diligent, and hardworking. She is good at water-based magic and is knowledgeable in close-quarters combat.

Sylphiette Greyrat (Voiced by: Ai Kayano)
A quarter-elf girl who lives in Buena Village. Her nickname is Sylphy. She has short green hair and a thin, boyish figure. She is quiet and obedient. Due to the color of her hair, she is bullied by the children of the village. However, she is rescued by Rudeus who becomes her friend and teaches her magic.

Eris Boreas Greyrat (Voiced by: Ai Kakuma)
The daughter of a high-ranking nobleman in the Kingdom of Asura. She has crimson red hair and violent temper which got her expelled from school and her tutor was sent to the hospital. She is gifted with a sword but is bad at studying.

Ruijerd Superdia (Voiced by: Daisuke Namikawa)
A warrior from the Supard race of demons who is known as “Dead End.” He is quiet, stubborn, and cares for children, while at the same time he is merciless toward those who hurt them. He has more than 500 years of combat experience and can see magic around him using the jewel on his forehead.

Paul Greyrat (Voiced by: Toshiyuki Morikawa)
Rudeus’ dad. He is a low-ranking knight in the village of Buena with exceptional sword skills. He was previously a member of the adventuring party Black Wolf’s Fang.

Zenith Greyrat (Voiced by: Hisako Kanemoto)
Rudeus’ mom. She is proficient in healing magic. She has a bright, caring personality and is a doting mom. She was previously a member of the adventuring party Black Wolf’s Fang.

Lillia Greyrat (Voiced by: Lynn)
The Grayrat family’s maid who takes her job seriously. She was weirded out by Rudeus’ strange behavior as an infant and kept her distance from him.

Ghislaine Dedordia (Voiced by: Megumi Toyoguchi)
A member of the cat beast tribe Dedordia and an exceptional swordswoman. She has brown skin, a muscular physique and wears a patch over her right eye, which is a magic eye that allows her to see magic. She has an excellent sense of smell and hearing as a beast and is able to track down her enemies with ease.

Kishirika Kishirisu (Voiced by: Yuka Iguchi)
Though she looks like a young girl, she is actually the demon empress. She possesses 12 demon eyes within her and can see the truth behind anything.

Orsted (Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda)
The sole dragon god member of the Seven Great World Powers. He has silver hair, gold eyes and a dangerous aura. He hates all the animals of this world and is feared due to his innate curses.

Almanfi (Voiced by: Kengo Kawanishi)
One of the 12 familiars of Pergius Dola and his right-hand servant who lives in the flying fortress Chaos Breaker. He can teleport to wherever there is light, making him skilled in reconnaissance and surprise attacks.

Elinalise Dragonroad (Voiced by: Rie Tanaka)
A former member of the adventurers’ party Fangs of the Black Wolf and an elven soldier. She teams up with Roxy and Talhand in search of her former companion Paul, whom she lost contact with after he moved.

Talhand (Voiced by: Hochu Otsuka)
A former member of the adventurers’ party Fangs of the Black Wolf. Due to his slow speed and dull wit, he wears heavy armor and uses magic against enemies while taking blows. He teams up with Roxy and Elinalise.

Human-God (Voiced by: Kujira)
A mysterious entity who calls himself “Human-God.” He declares himself to be a spirit embodying the dreams of humanity, but his true intentions are unknown.
