Synopsis

Maise Higa, a first-year high school student from Okinawa, is spending her summer vacation working part-time manning the front desk at her family’s hotel. One day, a strange guest from Tokyo arrives named Ichio Suzuki. After his arrival, strange things start happening throughout the hotel, including fish swimming around the room and a giant banyan tree breaking through the hotels’ ceiling. What is the cause of these mysterious events occurring between them?

Background

"Deji" Meets Girl is an original short TV anime being produced by LIDEN FILMS (Akashic Records of Bastard Magical Instructor, Cells at Work! Code Black, Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches). It is being directed by Ushio Tazawa (The Heroic Legend of Arslan, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, Traveling Daru) who is also handling character designs, and also features Akane Malbeni handling series composition and Hiroshi Nakamura (Endride, Oda Cinnamon Nobunaga, Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki) composing the music. Sixteen-year-old singer Aoi Kubo will perform the anime’s opening theme song, "Otogibanashi no Yоo na Kiseki." The anime will premiere in Japan on Oct. 2, 2021 as part of the Super Animeism programming block on MBS, TBS, and other channels, and one 90-second episode will air per week. Ahead of the broadcast, a teaser video was screened on the closing day of the 25th Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal on Aug. 25.

The anime’s story is being adapted into a manga by original character designer and series composer Akane Malbeni. It will include scenes not in the anime along with the inner thoughts of the characters. The serialization began with a prologue posted to Flex Comix's web service Comic Polaris on Sep. 30, and five more chapters plus an epilogue will be released later this year.

Characters

Maise Higa (Voiced by: Kiyono Yasuno)
A 16-year-old first-year high school student. She used to be on the handball team, but got injured and gave it up. During summer vacation, she is forced to help her dad with the family’s hotel business. She has a cheerful personality and isn’t bashful around anyone.

Ichiro Suzuki (Voiced by: Tatsuyuki Kobayashi)
A young man who is visiting from the mainland and stays at Hotel Higa for some reason. He has handsome looks, but he is always blunt and never smiles. His true identity is unknown.

Kaisei Higa (Voiced by: Kenta Miyake)
Maise’s father. He is 38 years old. He is the third generation owner of the long-established hotel, Hotel Higa. He has a big-hearted personality and likes to play the shamisen while drinking sake.

Teruko Higa (Voiced by: Ikuko Tani)
Maise’s grandmother. Her age is unknown. She is known in Okinawa as the medium Yuta. She seems to know the cause of the strange phenomena that suddenly arises.
