Synopsis

Baki has grown through facing death at the hands of strong enemies, and the time is ripe for him to finally face his father, Yujiro, who is said to be the “Strongest Living Creature on Earth.” However, before his fated fight, he decides to take on Oliva Biscuit, AKA Mr. Unchained, as a sparring partner. But Oliva is currently a prisoner at Black Pentagon, a prison for the most hardened criminals. In order to fight him, Baki has no choice but to get sent to Black Pentagon himself, where awaiting him isn’t just Oliva but other vicious criminals too!

Background

Originally written and illustrated by Keisuke Itagaki, Grappler Baki is a martial arts manga that was serialized from October 1991 until April 2018 for an incredible 132 volumes spanning across four series: Grappler Baki, Baki, Baki Hanma: Son of Ogre, and Baki-Dou. More than 75 million copies are in print, and the series has been adapted into OVAs, video games, and anime.

Baki Hanma is the third TV anime series and is based on the Baki Hanma: Son of Ogre manga. It was announced in September 2020 and is being produced once again by TMS Entertainment and features Toshiki Hirano returning as director with Tatsuhiko Urahata handling series composition, Shingo Ishikawa handling character designs, and Kenji Fujisawa composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is “Treasure Pleasure” by GRANRODEO, and the ending theme song is "Unchained World" by GENERATIONS from EXILE TRIBE. All 12 episodes of the anime will debut worldwide on Netflix on Sep. 30, 2021.

Characters

Baki Hanma (Voiced by: Nobunaga Shimazaki)
The titular protagonist Baki Hanma is the champion of the underground area after surviving repeated scrapes with death, including being poisoned by the death row criminal Ryuko Yanagi. He continues fighting daily in an effort to surpass his father Yujiro Hanma who is considered the Strongest Living Creature on Earth.

Yujiro Hanma (Voiced by: Akio Otsuka)
Yujiro has a reputation as the Strongest Living Creature on Earth, and he is Baki’s father. He has the strength to take down an army with his bare hands, and is feared by fighters, politicians, and armies all over the world. After seeing Baki’s growth as a fighter, he accepts his challenge.

Biscuit Oliva (Voiced by: Hochu Otsuka)
A Cuban-American of monstrous strength. He is also known as “Mr. Unchained.” He is a prisoner in the Arizona State Penitentiary (also known as the Black Pentagon) but is in a special position where he can freely come and go from the prison to capture criminals. The source of power is his cute girlfriend.

Jun Guevara (Voiced by: Kenji Nojima)
He is a prisoner in the Black Pentagon like Biscuit and is known as “Mister 2nd.” He has learned martial arts and was given a special education since childhood, and he founded a country while he was still young. He challenges Oliver, the strongest fighter in the US.

Maria (Voiced by: Mami Koyama)
Oliva’s girlfriend. He goes to see her every night and is the only person who can truly make him feel relaxed. Oliva loves her dearly. Her stunning looks were once able to turn the heads of everyone around her.

Garry Strydum (Voiced by: Takaya Hashi)
A colonel in the US Army and an old friend of Yujiro. He sees the fight between Baki and Yujiro as being comparable to a war between two countries

Rumina Ayukawa (Voiced by: Megumi Han)
An elementary school student who is bullied by his classmates into raiding Baki’s high school. He is knowledgeable about boxing.

Saman (Voiced by: Tessyo Genda)
The sole survivor of a ranger party hunting a larger than normal elephant. Even though the army intervened, the party was still completely destroyed. He says that Yujiro was the one who killed the monster, but no one believes him.

Iron Michael (Voiced by: Yasuhiro Mamiya)
A champion called the No. 1 boxer in history. He is known as the strongest boxer and goes by Iron Michael.

Lips / Teeth / Tongue (Voiced by: Koichi Yamadera)
Triplets known as “Mouth.” During fights, they are a perfect combination that go together like the lips, teeth, and tongue.

Chamomile Lessen (Voiced by: Kensho Ono)
Born on the same island as Jun, he used to be Bosch’s bodyguard. He shows his immense physical abilities and Jun’s strength to Bosch, who was against Jun founding an independent country.

Bob McCarthy (Voiced by: Masashi Ebara)
A 27-year-old prison officer. He witnessed the fierce fight between Baki and Biscuit up close. He watched the fight until the end, astonished by both fighters, who surpassed his knowledge of martial arts.
