Synopsis

Yuta Okkotsu is a high school student who longs for death. When he was a child, he lost his childhood friend Rika Yoshimoto, whom he promised to marry, in a car accident right in front of his eyes, and now he is haunted by her and the Curse she has turned into. Meanwhile, a teacher at the Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical College (also called Jujutsu High), a school that teaches about Curses in order to exorcise them, named Satoru Gojo appears. Known as the “Strongest Jujutsu Sorcerer,” Satoru notices Yuta’s plight and encourages him to enroll at the school. After years of hurting people around him due to Rika’s curse, he decides to change his life and starts down the road to becoming a jujutsu sorcerer together with his classmates Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki, and Panda.

Background

Jujutsu Kaisen began as a manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami that has been serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine since March 2018. Two light novel adaptations by Ballad Kitaguni have also been published: Jujutsu Kaisen: Soaring Summer and Returning Autumn in May 2019 and Jujutsu Kaisen: The Path of Roses at Dawn in January 2020.

A TV anime adaptation was announced in the 52nd issue of Weekly Shonen Jump published on Nov. 25, 2019. The anime is produced by MAPPA with Sung Hoo Park directing, Hiroshi Seko composing the series and writing the scripts, Tadashi Hiramatsu designing the characters, and Arisa Okehazama, Hiroaki Tsutsumi, and Yoshimasa Terui composing the music. The anime premiered in Japan on MBS and TBS on Oct. 3, 2020 during the Super Animeism programming block. It was streamed overseas by Crunchyroll and ran for 24 episodes.

A theatrical film adaptation was announced at the end of the 24th episode of the anime which aired in March 2021. It is based on the manga prequel story Jujutsu Kaisen 0: Tokyo Toritsu Jujutsu Koto Senmon Gakko by series creator Gege Akutami. It is once again being directed by MAPPA and sees many of the same returning staff, including Sung Hoo Park as director, Hiroshi Seko as scriptwriter, Tadashi Hiramatsu as character designer, and Arisa Okehazama, Hiroaki Tsutsumi, and Yoshimasa Terui composing the music. The film will open in theaters Japanwide on Dec. 24, 2021.

Characters

Yuta Okkotsu (Voiced by: Megumi Ogata)
The protagonist. He is a special grade cursed human haunted by the curse of his childhood friend Rika, whom he witnessed die in a car accident when he was a child. Due to the curse haunting him, he was teased and bullied all through growing up and became very timid, lonely, and unable to connect with others due to his lack of self-confidence. He wears an engagement ring on his left hand in honor of Rika, whom he promised he would marry one day. He is encouraged by Satoru to enroll at Jujutsu High, where he begins to learn how to control the curse.

Toge Inumaki (Voiced by: Kouki Uchiyama)
A first-year student at Jujutsu High and a Grade 1 jujutsu sorcerer. He is a user of Cursed Speech, which is an advanced technique he inherited from his family. The technique allows him to amplify his words using cursed energy to make anyone who hears him obey. The range of the effect can also be extended using a megaphone, and his technique even works through communication devices like cell phones. However, the more powerful his commands and the more he uses the technique, the more it takes a toll on his body, which could result in harm to himself if he isn’t careful.

Maki Zenin (Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu)
A first-year student at Jujutsu High and a Grade 4 jujutsu sorcerer. She is a descendant of the Zenin family, one of the Big Three Sorcerer Families, but doesn’t like being called by her last name due to a falling out with her family over her lack of cursed energy. She is a tomboy with a rebellious spirit and sometimes speaks in a rough tone, but deep down she is very caring and loves her friends. She dislikes Yuta upon first meeting him but gradually warms up to him. Panda calls her a tsundere. Since she can’t see and exorcise curses with her naked eyes or bare hands, she wears special glasses that allow her to see curses and use spells to fight back. Though rejected by her family, she is determined to become the next head of the family and works hard to improve her powers, even though her family tries to keep her down.

Panda Voiced by: Tomokazu Seki)
A first-year student at Jujutsu High and a Grade 2 jujutsu sorcerer. Though he appears to be a panda who can talk, he is actually an Abrupt Mutated Cursed Corpse that was created by Masamichi Yaga and given emotions. He is the most sensible among his classmates and he always looks out for and takes care of his friends. He also has a mischievous side and likes to tease Maki by pointing out her tsundere attitude toward Yuta.

Satoru Gojo (Voiced by: Yuichi Nakamura)
Satoru is a sorcerer and teacher at Jujutsu High who is known as the “Strongest Jujutsu Sorcerer.” He encourages Yuta to enroll at Jujutsu High.
