Senpai ga Uzai Kohai no Hanashi

Synopsis

Futaba Igarashi is a chibi-sized, hardworking OL who is often mistaken for a child. Her job wouldn’t be so bad, though, if it wasn’t for her big, boisterous senpai, Harumi Takeda, who constantly teases and annoys her. She seems to be annoyed by everything he does, from the way he laughs to the way he pats her head and treats her like a kid. But to her friends and coworkers, it’s clear that she actually likes him, she just can’t seem to realize it!

Background

My Senpai Is Annoying is a manga series written and illustrated by Shiro Manta that began serialization in Ichijinsha's Comic POOL digital manga magazine in July 2018. The manga has been released in seven tankobon volumes to date, with the eighth volume scheduled to be released in September 2021. The manga won the 2018 Next Manga Award in the Web Manga category and has sold more than 1 million copies as of July 2020. Seven Seas Entertainment have licensed the manga for English release in North America, and five volumes have been published as of July 2021.

A TV anime adaptation was announced in July 2020. It is being animated by Doga Kobo (Anima Yell!, Asteroid in Love, GJ Club) and features Ryota Itoh (Aikatsu Stars!, Gatchaman Crowds insight, Waiting in the Summer) as director with Yoshimi Narita (Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart, I★CHU: Halfway Through the Idol, Tropical-Rouge! Precure) handling series composition, Shigemitsu Abe (Genshiken: Second Generation, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Little Witch Academia) handling character designs, and Hiroaki Tsutsumi (Alice in Borderland, Hyperdimension Neptunia, Monster Musume: Everyday Life with Monster Girls) composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is "Annoying! San-san Week!" by Tomori Kusunoki, Saori Hayami, Reina Aoyama, and Aoi Koga as their respective characters, and Yui Horie is singing the ending theme song, "Niji ga Kakaru made no Hanashi." The anime will premiere in Japan on Oct. 9, 2021 on Tokyo MX and BS11.

Characters

Futaba Igarashi (Voiced by: Tomori Kusunoki)
A chibi-sized office worker who finds her senpai annoying (though she of course also relies on him). She is sometimes mistaken for an elementary school student and hates being treated like a child. Contrary to her appearance, she is a bit strong-willed but isn’t very good at love. Her favorite food is Oshiruko.

Harumi Takeda (Voiced by: Shunsuke Takeuchi)
A senior who is annoyed by the juniors he works with. He is Futaba’s mentor. He is trusted by his coworkers and is highly respected. His main flaws are his crassness and insensitivity. He is well built and used to practice judo as a student. His favorite drink is green tea.

Toko Sakurai (Voiced by: Saori Hayami)
A senior coworker of Futaba’s. She has a cheerful personality and is popular with the male employees due to her good looks and style. She is a bit shy when it comes to love. She cares about Futaba. Her favorite confection is macarons.

Sota Kazama (Voiced by: Reio Tsuchida)
A senior coworker of Futaba’s who started at the company at the same time as Toko. He’s also a gamer. He always seems to be in a dull mood and doesn’t show much emotion. He watches over the relationship between Futaga and Harumi from afar. His favorite confection is daifuku.

Natsumi Kurobe (Voiced by: Reina Aoyama)
Futaba’s best friend since junior high school. She usually makes fun of Futaba but also helps her with serious matters. She likes to run. Her favorite confection is bitter chocolate.

Yuto Sakurai (Voiced by: Yui Horie)
Toko’s younger brother. He resembles Toko and has a mole under his left eye. He isn’t good at sports but loves basketball. He is at the age where he is anxious about a lot. He moved to the town where his sister lives when he entered high school.

Mona Tsukishiro (Voiced by: Aoi Koga)
A colleague and friend of Toko’s. She has a unique tone and demeanor that is hard to grasp. She often listens to Toko’s stories about Futaba.
