Synopsis

Set in the Taisho era, Tamahiko Shima was born into a rich family and had a comfortable upbringing, but after a serious accident, he loses his mother, his father’s respect, and the freedom of his right hand. He is sent away to live in the countryside for medical treatment, and there he becomes pessimistic and before he knows it starts hating the world entirely. Then, a girl named Yuzuki Tachibana, who was appointed by his father to be Tamahiko’s wife, comes to him and begins taking care of him. At first Tamahiko finds her annoying, but gradually due to her smile and kindness he begins to open his heart to her. Will they be able to become a true couple? A nostalgic Taisho love story begins!

Background

Taisho Otome Fairy Tale is a manga series written and illustrated by Sana Kirioka that was serialized in Shueisha's shonen manga magazine Jump Square from July 2015 to September 2017. The manga is published under their Jump Comics SQ label, and it ended after its fifth tankobon volume was released in October 2017. A sequel manga titled Showa Otome Otogi Banashi was serialized on Shueisha's online magazine Shonen Jump+ from August 2018 to May 2020 and was released in five tankobon volumes. A spin-off manga titled Taisho Otome Otogi Banashi: Enseika no Shokutaku was also launched on the Shonen Jump+ website and app in July 2021.

A TV anime adaptation was announced at the Jump Festa '21 online event in December 2020. It is being produced by SynergySP (Hayate the Combat Butler, Kirarin Revolution, Major) and features Jun Hatori (Beyblade: Metal Fury, Cross Game, Elegant Yokai Apartment Life) as director with Hiroko Fukuda (Amanchu! Advance, Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks?, Those Snow White Notes) handling series composition and scripts, Mayumi Watanabe (Freezing, Happy Seven, Majikoi - Oh! Samurai Girls) handling character designs, and Yasuharu Takanashi (All Out!!, Fairy Tail, Naruto Shippuden) composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is "Otome no Kokoroe" by GARNiDELiA, and the ending theme song is “Makokoro ni So” by Shunichi Toki. The anime will premiere in Japan on Oct. 8, 2021 on TV Tokyo and TV Osaka and will be streamed in North America through Funimation.

Characters

Tamahiko Shima (Voiced by: Yusuke Kobayashi)
The second son of the Shima family. After losing the freedom of his right hand in an accident, his father orders him to live in the Chiba countryside. Fed up with everything in this world, he spends his days holed up indoors, not even going to school. His hobby is reading, and he excels at schoolwork. He also has a surprisingly sullen side, and he hides his stash of dirty magazines.

Yuzuki Tachibana (Voiced by: Saya Aizawa)
A girl who was bought by the Shima family to be Tamahiko's wife and to take care of him. She is innocent and devoted. Tamahiko calls her "Yuzu." She is good at cooking and sewing. She has two major problems with her body: her frizzy hair and her large chest.

Tamako Shima (Voiced by: Yume Miyamoto)
The second daughter of the Shima family and Tamahiko’s younger sister. Among her siblings, she is one of the most promising and talented, but she is also very strong-minded and often clashes with others. She is mature for her age, but also has a lonely side.

Ryo Atsumi (Voiced by: Chika Anzai)
A young girl living on the outskirts of the village. Raised by a drunk father, she takes care of her three younger brothers on behalf of her mother. She gives off a brash impression and sometimes takes risks, but she is quite devoted to her younger brothers. She is hostile toward Tamahiko and Yugetsu. Her favorite food is futomaki.

Kotori Shiratori (Voiced by: Ayasa Ito)
A Taisho diva loved by men and women of all ages whose records are very popular. She can play a variety of instruments, but mostly plays her favorite guitar. Her mother is a famous actress, and she lived abroad as a child. She has a straightforward personality.

Hakaru Shiratori (Voiced by: Shunichi Toki)
Kotori’s twin brother. He is a friendly young man who wears glasses. He used to be a musician before Kotori but quit for some reason. He slightly distances himself from music and Kotori.
