Synopsis

The elite members of the Border Defense Agency face a new threat!
The Border Defense Agency was established to fight against aliens called “Neighbors” that possess unknown powers. Osamu Mikumo, a member of Border, forms the Mikumo Squad together with Yuma Kuga, a Neighbor he met by chance, and his childhood friend Chika Amatori, and they struggle to win the Border ranking in order to join the expeditionary force to Neighborhood. Meanwhile, information is received that a new attack from Neighborhood is imminent. In order to prevent the city from descending into chaos, Border is preparing a top-secret interception system with elite A-Rank members based on the predictions of Yuichi Jin. Just when a Gate appears in the sky and Kei Tachikawa, the No. 1 ranked attacker, is about to make his move, what does Jin see in the future?

Background

World Trigger is a manga series written and illustrated by Daisuke Ashihara that was originally serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from February 2013 to November 2018 before switching to Jump Square in December 2018. As of February 2021, 23 collected tankobon volumes have been published. It has been licensed for English release in North America by Viz Media.

The series has received two video game adaptations. The first, titled World Trigger: Borderless Mission, is an action game developed by Artdink and released on PlayStation Vita in Japan on September 17, 2015. The second, titled World Trigger: Smash Borders, is a mobile game developed by Ganbarion and released on iOS and Android on July 21, 2015 and later on PlayStation Vita the following year.

The third season of the anime adaptation was announced during Jump Festa '21 in December 2020. The series is once again being animated by Toei Animation (Digimon Adventure tri., Dragon Ball Z, One Piece), and returning staff include Morio Hatano (Dragon Ball Super, GeGeGe no Kitaro, Hugtto! Precure) as series director, Hiroyuki Yoshino (Black Butler: Book of Circus, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, Guilty Crown) as series composer, Toshihisa Kaiya (Ascendance of a Bookworm, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion the Animation) as character designer and chief animation director, and Kenji Kawai (Eden of the East, Fate/stay night, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni) as music composer. Rock band Kami wa Saikoro wo Furanai will be performing the anime’s first opening theme song "Time Factor," while music duo Fantastic Youth will perform the anime’s first ending theme song "Ungai Dokei." The anime will premiere in Japan on Oct. 9, 2021 as part of TV Asahi's NUMAnimation programming block and will be streamed by Crunchyroll as it airs in Japan as part of their fall lineup

Characters

Osamu Mikumo (Voiced by: Yuki Kaji)
A 15-year-old boy known as “Tamakoma Second” who is the leader of the Mikumo Squad, a B-Rank Border squad. He aims to join the expeditionary force to Neighborhood together with his friends Yuma and Chika. His inexperience in battle is noticeable, but he makes up for it with ingenuity and imagination.

Yuma Kuga (Voiced by: Tomo Muranaka)
A 15-year-old boy from Neighborhood. He is invited by Osamu to join Mikumo Squad. He has a wealth of combat experience and is one of the best in Border for his agile attacks. His Side Effect allows him to be able to see through the lies of his opponents.

Chika Amatori (Voiced by: Nao Tamura)
A 14-year-old girl and Osamu’s childhood friend. She has been targeted by Neighbors since she was a child due to having a huge amount of Trion. She joins Border in order to rescue her brother and friend who were taken to Neighborhood and becomes a member of Mikumo Squad. Though she is a sniper, she has a hard time shooting people.

Yuichi Jin (Voiced by: Yuichi Nakamura)
An aloof young man who belongs to Tamakoma Branch. He is one of the best fighters in Border and calls himself "Talented Elite." He used to be an S-Rank member who possessed a Black Trigger, but he gave it away so that Yuma could join Border. His Side Effect allows him to see the near future.

Hyuse (Voiced by: Nobunaga Shimazaki)
A Neighbor from the military nation of Aftokrator. He attacked Mikado City during the large-scale invasion, where he confronted Jin but was abandoned by Hairein and left behind in the world. He is currently a prisoner of Border and is being kept at Tamakoma Branch.

Gatlin (Voiced by: Hisao Egawa)
Captain of the Galopoula Expeditionary Force. He has been ordered by Aftokrator to stop Border and is preparing to carry out his mission. His Trigger is “Vasilissa.”

Ratarikov (Voiced by: Toshiyuki Toyonaga)
A member of the Galopoula Expeditionary Force. His Trigger is “Despinis.”

Wen So (Voiced by: Mie Sonozaki)
A member of the Galopoula Expeditionary Force. She is a red-haired girl with sharp eyes. Her Trigger is “Servitora.”

Koskero (Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda)
The vice-captain of the Galopoula Expeditionary Force. His Trigger is “Nikokyra.”

Reghindetz (Voiced by: Ayumu Murase)
A member of the Galopoula Expeditionary Force. His Trigger is “Thugater.”

Yomi (Voiced by: Ryoko Shiraishi)
The youngest member of the Galopoula Expeditionary Force. He is an operator in charge of overall support.

Mikhail Cronin (Voiced by: Ryota Takeuchi)
An engineer with the Tamakoma branch.

Yuri Rindo (Voiced by: Mamiko Noto)
An operator with the Tamakoma branch. She is Takumi’s niece.
