Synopsis
Ordinary high school boy Kouta Hasegawa has a secret he can’t share with anyone - he absolutely loves cute characters and in particular Sanrio’s Pompompurin! Too embarrassed to reveal his cute character love to those around him, Kouta’s days are dull and filled with melancholy until, that is, he meets fellow student Yuu Mizuno who, to his surprise, loves My Melody. Yuu tells Kouta that there’s nothing wrong with loving cute characters, and he’s not as alone as he thought he was because there are a few other guys at the school who also love Sanrio. Together with Yuu, Shunsuke Yoshino, Ryo Nishimiya, Seiichiro Minamoto, Subaru Amagaya, and Naoki Sugami, Kouta learns to embrace his character love out loud rather than being alone and embarrassed.
Sanrio Boys is a merchandising franchise created by Sanrio to promote their character goods. Conceptualized as a social media project, the boys soon became popular enough in their own right to receive their own anime, manga, character drama CDs, and smartphone games as well as their very own character merchandising line.
Anime Adaptation
The Sanrio Boys anime adaptation was announced in the fifth 2017 edition of Sho-Comi magazine and premiered in Japan on Jan. 6, 2018. The first season will run for 12 episodes and is simulcast in the US via Crunchyroll.
The opening theme for the first season is “Seishun Interlude” by Hiroyuki Kagura, Jun Oosuka, Soma Saito, Takuya Eguchi, & Yuma Uchida, who also perform the ending theme, “Now on Dream!”.

Outgoing and sociable, Yuu Mizuno is totally open about his love of cute character My Melody and feels no embarrassment about it at all. Yuu first got into My Melody through looking after his little sister while his parents worked and using her cute accessories out of practicality. The girls in class actually quite like that Yuu likes cute characters, and also find his devotion to his sister attractive. He has poor eyesight and can be seen putting in contact lenses during the anime’s opening.

Shunsuke Yoshino is the ace striker on the school’s soccer team and is popular with the ladies despite his often aloof and sullen manner. He tends to be especially cold to the girls he likes without knowing how to approach them, but begins to figure things out after making friends with Kouta and Yuu. He doesn’t have a crush on anyone at the moment though. He views Hello Kitty as something like a goddess after being given a Hello Kitty charm by his first love and finding that it brought him great success on the soccer pitch.

Seiichiro Matsumoto is the head of the students association as well as a leading member in the archery club. Through meeting Kouta and the other character-loving boys, Seiichiro learns to work through his resentment towards his mother.

Subaru Amagaya is a delinquent who failed his middle-school exams and is intent on rebelling against his education-crazed mother. He loves Badtz-Maru for his crazy anarchic behavior. Through meeting Kouta and the other character-loving boys, Subaru learns to work through his resentment towards his mother and develops the desire to become a better person who understands himself better.
Naoki Sugami (Wataru Hatano)

Naoki is the assistant form tutor for second year class 3. He’s loved Keroppi since he was a kid but couldn’t even admit to himself. Through his love of characters, he gradually builds up a friendship with his students.
Yuri Mizuno (Akane Fujita)
Akane is Yuu Mizuno’s little sister and is still in middle-school. She is not friends with her big brother and is embarrassed by his My Melody love.
