Background

First released as an RPG for the PlayStation Portable in July 2010, Fate/Extra is an entry in Type-Moon’s Fate franchise.

The game was developed with Image Epoch and published by Marvelous Entertainment and is set in a parallel universe to one of the franchise’s best-known titles, Fate/stay night. Since its initial release, it has received a North American localization by Aksys Games. It was also localized for PAL territories by Ghostlight.

Synopsis

The series is centered on Hakuno Kishinami, a high school student who has woken up in a virtual world with no memories of his past. He’s then forced to fight for his survival in a war for the Holy Grail alongside the Servant Saber, and to find answers about his own identity.

Anime Adaptation

The anime adaptation of Fate/Extra was first announced in March 2016, and it’s being animated by studio Shaft (Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Monogatari). Yukihiro Miyamoto and Akiyuki Shinbo are working as directors while Kinoko Nasu, well-known for his work on other Fate works including Fate/Apocrypha, Fate/Grand Order: First Order, Fate/stay night, Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, and more is working on series composition and Satoru Kosaki (Lucky Star, OreImo) is working on music. The opening theme is “Bright Burning Shout” by Takanori Nishikawa (Rurouni Kenshin) while the ending theme is “Tsuki to Hanataba” by Sayuri (Erased).

As for the vocal talent, Atsushi Abe (Bakuman.) and Sakura Tange (Cardcaptor Sakura) are starring as Hakuno Kishinami and Saber, respectively. The supporting cast, meanwhile, includes Kana Ueda (Gurren Lagann), Noriko Shitaya (Is This a Zombie?), Urara Takano (Macross 7), and Hiroshi Kamiya (Attack on Titan) as Rin Tohsaka, Sakura Matou, Rider, and Shinji Matou respectively.

The anime adaptation began airing on Jan. 27, 2018 on Tokyo MX before being followed by premieres on Gunma TV, Tochigi TV, BS11, and MBS. It is also being exclusively streamed on Netflix.
