Synopsis

In 2202, three years after the Yamato’s return from Iscandar, the Earth has been restored to its formerly blue state thanks to the Cosmo Reverse System and peace has been brokered with Garmillas. Alongside the reconstruction, Earth has also strengthened its defence capabilities, including the building of a state of the art battleship, Andromeda. Paying no heed to Starsha Iscandar’s requests, Earth has once again begun walking down a warlike path. The Yamato too assisted in these goals at the cost of countless irreplaceable lives. The goddess Teresa, praying for peace in space, calls the Yamato to a new purpose.The Galantis’ rapacious conquest of space is nearing the Earth…

Background

Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202, known in Japan as Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Warriors of Love, is a direct continuation from Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 which was inspired by the classic Space Battleship Yamato franchise created by Yoshinobu Nishizaki and Leiji Matsumoto and loosely adapts Space Battleship Yamato II and Arrivederci Yamato from the original film series.

Like Space Battleship Yamato 2199, 2202 was first released as a series of movies screened theatrically and released for VOD streaming. The series will be broadcast in a TV anime edition from Oct. 5, 2018.

The opening theme for the series is "Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2202” by Isao Sasaki. The ending theme for episodes 1 and 2 will be "Yamato yori Ai o Komete” by Kenji Sawada, "Tsuki no Kagami” by Sayaka Kanda for episodes 3 to 6, "Kimi, Hitohira” by Shino Arima for episodes 7 to 10, "Crimson Red" by Yuya Hoshino for episodes 11 to 14, and “Yoranka" by Shino Arima with Maytree for episodes 15 to 18.

Characters

Susumu Kodai (Voiced by: Daisuke Ono (Japanese), Christopher Wehkamp (English))

Susumu Kodai is the chief tactical officer aboard the Yamato. After Okita’s agreement with Starsha Iscandar to remove the Wave Motion Gun components and end their production on Earth, Kodai concentrates on thinking hard about his own future. Meeting Teresa on arrival at Telezart, he discovers that the Yamato and crew have a grand part to play in the pursuit of peace. An unexpected meeting with old enemy Dessler leads Kodai towards a tripartite interstellar war with the Garmillas Empire and Gatlantis.

Yuki Mori (Voiced by: Houko Kuwashima (Japanese), Mallorie Rodak (English))

Yuki Mori is a 23-year-old officer serving aboard the Yamato. She fell in love with Kodai during the voyage to Iscandar. She lost her memories in an accident and only remembers the last four years of her life. Perhaps for this reason, she was the only Yamato crew member not to receive Teresa’s message leading Kodai to ask her to stay behind on Earth when they prepare to hijack the ship, but Yuki stows away to be close to him. On the planet Stravase she once again shows her strength in offering her life to save Kodai.

Daisuke Shima (Voiced by: Kenichi Suzumura (Japanese), Ricco Fajardo (English))

Daisuke Shima is a 24-year-old officer aboard the Yamato. Originally against Kodai’s plan to hijack the ship, he is eventually convinced. Shima quickly figures out that Yuki Mori is the stowaway but pretends not to know anything. He understands Kodai’s distress better than anyone, and the pair have a strong friendship in which they can speak to each other seriously in private.

Shiro Sanada (Voiced by: Houchu Ohtsuka (Japanese), Phil Parsons (English))

Shiro Sanada is the Yamato’s executive officer and chief scientist. While in charge of the Yamamoto’s repairs he begins investigating the existence of a disturbance in time. Kodai selected him as his second-in-command when he took the Yamato after hearing the call from Teresa. Fascinated by Teresa’s higher plane existence, he continues to dwell on solving the mystery.

Hikozaemon Tokugawa (Voiced by: Mugihito (Japanese), R Bruce Elliott (English))

Hikozaemon Tokugawa is the Yamato’s 66-year-old chief engineer. He is the oldest member of crew and was planning to retire after returning from Iscandar, but his plans are disrupted by the discoveries made during the Yamato’s repairs. In the absence of Okita he takes on a paternal role towards the youngsters aboard the ship.

Kaoru Niimi (Voiced by: Aya Hisakawa (Japanese), Mikaela Krantz (English))

Kaoru Niimi is a 31-year-old officer aboard the Yamato and the former information chief. She is seriously injured when the body of a Gatlantean soldier explodes and does not recover in time for the Yamato’s departure. When her wounds heal she is attached to the team researching the time disturbance, perhaps hoping to reunite with Sanada.

Yasuo Nanbu (Voiced by: Kenji Akabane (Japanese), Stephen Fu (English))

Yasuo Nanbu is the 25-year-old weapons chief aboard the Yamato. During the journey to Iscandar his strange sense of elitism is worn away and he becomes an indomitable soldier.

Yoshikazu Aihara (Voiced by: Masato Kokubun (Japanese), Aaron Roberts (English))

Yoshikazu Aihara is the 26-year-old communications officer aboard the Yamato. He is a kind and gentle young man who is always looking out for his subordinates.

Kenjiro Ota (Voiced by: Yuki Chiba (Japanese))

Kenjiro Ota is the 25-year-old radar operator aboard the Yamato. He’s a big guy who likes his food and has a carefree and easy manner. He was worried about Shima when he was late for the Yamato’s departure.

Susumu Yamazaki (Voiced by: Hiroshi Tsuchida (Japanese), Robert McCollum (English))

Susumu Yamazaki is a 49 year old who formerly served aboard the Yamato. As a veteran engineer he worked alongside Tokugawa for whom he has great loyalty and respect. He decided to stay behind when the Yamato left Earth and is now working with Niimi and the others researching the time disturbance.

Isami Enomoto (Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda (Japanese), Bryan Massey (English))

Isami Enomoto is the 40-year-old Botswain aboard the Yamato with authority over the whole ship, deck, and exterior. A veteran soldier who worked his way up through the ranks, he was also an instructional officer when Shima and Kodai were at the military academy.

Saburo Kato (Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya (Japanese))

Saburo Kato is the 27-year-old flying core leader aboard the Yamato. While attached to the Moon Base, he trained the next generation of fighter pilots. Together with Aihara and Yamamoto, he conspires to desert from the fleet and go back to the moon to look after his son, Tsubasa, who is seriously ill. His wife, Makoto, eventually convinces him to return to the Yamato.

Akira Yamamoto (Voiced by: Rie Tanaka (Japanese))

Akira Yamamoto is a 23-year-old member of the Yamato’s flying core. She abandoned her training on the Moon Base along with Aihara and took her beloved aircraft, the Cosmo Tiger 1, to join up with the Yamato. She may seem cold but hides a passionate interior and is extremely solicitous towards the younger pilots in the squadron. She participated in the Telezart landing operation wearing mobile armor and proved extremely successful even using unfamiliar equipment.

Hajime Saito (Voiced by: Hiroki Touchi (Japanese), Christopher R. Sabat (English))

Hajime Saito is the 31-year-old leader of the 7th regiment of the marines. He is a kind man but knows more than anyone the costs of war. While stationed on the Eleventh Planet, he continued fighting to protect the lives of civilians even after the defensive lines had been breached and was eventually rescued by the Yamato. While he’s grateful to Kodai, Saito also criticizes him as a commander unable to make difficult decisions because of his aversion to Wave Motion Guns. He participated in the Telezart landing operation and accomplished great things but lost many men.

Makoto Kato (Voiced by: Rina Satou (Japanese))

Makoto Kato, neé Harada, is a 25-year-old nurse who previously served aboard the Yamato. She is also married to Saburo Kato and gave birth to their son, Tsubasa, after leaving the military. Unfortunately, Tsubasa became ill when he was only a few months old. She now lives on the Moon Base where Tsubasa receives treatment at the hospital. Despite her own feelings, she convinces Saburo to return to the Yamato when he tries to desert.

Tsubasa Kato (Voiced by: Natsumi Takamori (Japanese))

Tsubasa is two and a half years old and the son of Makoto and Saburo Kato. He loves aeroplanes and the Yamato. He is currently receiving treatment for an illness on the Moon Base but as there is not yet a cure for his condition the doctors are not hopeful.

Dr. Sakezo Sado (Voiced by: Shigeru Chiba (Japanese))

Dr. Sakezo Sado is the 58-year-old chief medical officer aboard the Yamato. He is an experienced general medical practitioner who knows better than anyone the limits of medicine and the transience of all things. Sado is also an enthusiastic co-conspirator in Yuki Mori’s stowaway plan.

Analyzer Unit 09 (Voiced by: Cho (Japanese), Sonny Strait (English))

Analyzer Unit 09, or R-9 Autonomous Type Shipborne Analysis Unit, to go by its official name, is a robot aboard the Yamato who works in the server room and is in charge of analysis. It prefers to be addressed simply as “Analyzer” and hates being called by its official name or serial number.

Mikage Kiryu (Voiced by: Eriko Nakamura (Japanese))

Mikage Kiryu is a 22-year-old science officer who formerly served aboard the Yamato. At the time of the Yamato’s departure, she got off the ship along with Yamazaki and the others to take control of the dock’s water system and was left behind. She is currently working with the team researching the time disturbance.

Toru Hoshina (Voiced by: Motoki Takagi (Japanese))

Toru Hoshina is a 22 year old who previously served aboard the Yamato as a security officer. A kind and friendly young man, he is also dedicated enough to be able to accomplish difficult covert operations. At the time of the Yamato’s departure it was decided that he stay behind to help with the rebuilding of Earth.

Yuria Misaki (Voiced by: Aya Uchida (Japanese), Sarah Wiedenheft (English))

Yuria Misaki is 21 years old and once served aboard the Yamato as an operations officer. The youngest member of crew, she began to develop feelings for Toru Hoshina during the voyage to Iscandar. After the return she remained with the military as a civilian assistant and dedicated herself to help with the recovery. It was decided she stay behind to carry on working on the rebuilding of Earth at the time of the Yamato’s departure.

Miki Saijo (Voiced by: Satomi Moriya (Japanese), Dani Chambers (English))

Miki Saijo is a 24-year-old radar operator aboard the Yamato working alongside Yuki Mori. A talented woman, she is able to provide clear and accurate analysis even in the heat of battle.

Hajime Hirata (Voiced by: Fumihide Ise (Japanese), Jeremy Inman (English))

Hajime Hirata is the 27-year-old chief accountant aboard the Yamato. Though a little older, he was in the same class as Shima and Kodai and gets on with both of them. Warm and kind, Hajime is well liked aboard the ship and is responsible for food and supplies. He really hates big bugs though.

Tetsuya Kitano (Voiced by: Ryuichi Kijima (Japanese))

Tetsuya Kitano is a 24-year-old tactical officer aboard the Yamato. He is reserved yet eminently capable, earning the trust of Kodai and Nanbu. He’d long hoped to be able to join the Yamato and secretly longs to be at the controls.

Hiroki Shinohara (Voiced by: Daisuke Hirakawa (Japanese), Eric Vale (English))

Hiroki Shinohara is 28 years old and the second-in-command of the Yamato’s fighter squadron. He’s been friends with the squadron’s commander Kato for years, and every now and then he has to cross the line and intervene on a personal level when Kato is being particularly difficult. He may look like a frivolous person with his long hair and laidback way of speaking, but he’s also sensible and able to take on unpleasant duties.

Sho Sawamura (Voiced by: Yuya Chikaki (Japanese), Austin Tindle (English))

Sho Sawamura is a 23-year-old fighter pilot aboard the Yamato. He’s tough but cheerful. He was once the youngest of the pilots, but now the young guys look up to him like a big brother.

Takeshi Takuma (Voiced by: Ryuichi Kijima (Japanese))

Takeshi Takuma is a veteran fighter pilot aboard the Yamato. At 190 cm tall, he cuts a majestic figure.

Jiro Tsurumi (Voiced by: Keisuke Koumoto (Japanese), Apphia Yu (English))

Jiro Tsurumi is 19 years old and a new fighter pilot attached to the Moon Base. He has fierce admiration for Kato and hugely respects his fighting skills. Jiro was selected to participate in the landing operations at Telezart piloting a Cosmos Tiger II equipped with warp booster.

Juzo Okita (Voiced by: Takayuki Sugo (Japanese), Brian Mathis (English))

Fifty eight years old at the time of his death, Juzo Okita was the first captain of the Yamato. A commander with immense ingenuity and judgement, Okita knows better than anyone the folly of war as well as the difficulties and preciousness of peace. On the Yamato’s return a special monument to him was built in the outskirts of the city, and even after his death he remains well loved among the Yamato’s crew.

Osamu Yamanami (Voiced by: Masashi Ebara (Japanese), Kent Williams (English))

Osamu Yamanami is 52 years old and the captain of the Andromeda. He was previously the captain of the Kirishima as part of the fleet commanded by Okita who placed great faith in him. Yamanami pretends to be an optimist but has a realistic approach to thinking about the future of mankind. Having received an order to stop the Yamato, he actively stands against Kodai and the others.

Ryu Hijikata (Voiced by: Unsho Ishizuka (Japanese), Bill Jenkins (English))

Ryu Hijikata is the 60-year-old second captain of the Yamato. He was picked up by the Yamato after being caught up in the Gatlantean attack and originally turned down calls to become the captain but served as an advisor to Kodai who was struggling with the Motion Wave Gun problem. Hijikata eventually became captain during the Telezart landing operations.

Shuntaro Yasuda (Voiced by: Isao Sasaki (Japanese))

Shuntaro Yasuda is the 52-year-old captain of the Andromeda class vessel, Apollo Norm. He went to university with Andromeda captain Yamanami.

Shiori Nagakura (Voiced by: Kazusa Amagai (Japanese), Jamie Marchi (English))

Shiori Nagakura is 29 years old and the vice-commander of the 7th regiment of the marines. A long serving officer, Nagakura’s salty manner of speaking hides her pure-hearted personality. On Saito’s orders, she issued the call for help when the Eleventh Planet is attacked by the Gatlanteans. She was officially appointed vice-commander after the Telezart landing operations and is committed to guiding as many of her troops home as humanly possible.

Masaru Kurata (Voiced by: Kiyohito Yoshikai (Japanese))

Masaru Kurata is a 29-year-old member of the 7th regiment of marines. A pro at using mobile armor, Masaru also loves to gamble but rarely wins.

Toshio Amagi (Voiced by: Jiro Saito (Japanese))

Toshio Amagi is 28 years old and a former member of the 7th regiment of the marines. A big guy, Toshio also has a big heart and a fondness for wild flowers.

Gen Furuhashi (Voiced by: Toshitsugu Takashina (Japanese))

Gen Furuhashi is a member of the 7th regiment of marines and the second-in-command of the squad led by Saito. Decisive, Furuhashi enjoys the deep trust of his commander.

Saki Todo (Voiced by: Ayahi Takagaki (Japanese))

Saki Todo is the 27-year-old captain of the Ginga. She decided on designing the experimental ship while enduring cruel treatment aboard the Prometheus. He cool gaze hides a fierce determination.

Mina Ichinose (Voiced by: Tomoyo Kurosawa (Japanese))

Mina Ichinose is the 20-year-old navigator of the Ginga. She has no direct experience of warfare but possesses intense self-determination and independence.

Megumi Kanzaki (Voiced by: Megumi Hayashibara (Japanese))

Megumi Kanzaki is the 36-year-old second officer aboard the Ginga. She gets on extremely well with relatively young captain Todo.

Urara Kusakabe (Voiced by: Arisa Komiya (Japanese))

Urara Kusakabe is the 21-year-old tactical officer aboard the Ginga. She is able to judge in an instant the usefulness of an AI designed plan. Urara is determined to push herself as far as she can go as a soldier, scientist, and woman.

Robert Redrowz (Voiced by: Takaya Hashi (Japanese))

Robert Redrowz is an Earth researcher working on ancient Aquarian culture. He was picked up by the Yamato with the other survivors after the Gatlantean attack on the Eleventh Planet.

Toko Katsuragi (Voiced by: Yuko Kaida (Japanese))

Toko Katsuragi is a beautiful young student working as an assistant to Robert Redrowz researching ancient Aquarian culture. Picked up with the other Eleventh Planet refugees after the Gatlantean attack, she was attached to the Yamato’s medical division thanks to having a healthcare qualification.

Heikuro Todo (Voiced by: Toshihiko Kojima (Japanese), Bradley Campbell (English))

Heikuri Todo is the 63-year-old commander-in-chief of the Earth Defence Force. Intent on expanding the Earth’s recovery and defensive powers, he privately harbors doubts. He was personally hurt by the Yamato’s insurrection, but eventually decided to give his blessing to Kodai and the others.

Kotetsu Serizawa (Voiced by: Tessho Genda (Japanese))

Kotetsu Serizawa is the 59-year-old second in command of the Earth Defence forces. Serizawa harbors political ambitions and is in favor of the Wave Motion Gun.

Earth Federation President (Voiced by: Yuji Mikimoto (Japanese))

Sixty years old, the Earth Federation President is an idealist at heart but tries his best to find a compromise with reality. He ratified the actions of the Yamato in order to avoid probes about the time disturbance.

Lauren Barel (Voiced by: Masaki Terasoma (Japanese))

Lauren Barel is the Garmillan ambassador on Earth. Generally a thoughtful civilian, Barel sometimes resorts to strong arm diplomacy and keeps a firm grip on the Earth’s political trends. He talks the Earth Federation President into ratifying the Yamato’s actions on Telezart.

Klaus Keyman (Voiced by: Hiroshi Kamiya (Japanese), Daman Mills (English))

Klaus Keyman is a Garmillian military officer stationed on Earth and Barel’s right-hand man. He was later forced to join the crew of the Yamato and is usually a man of few words but is prone to the odd frank outburst. A first rate pilot, Keyman also took part in the battle for the Eleventh Planet and unmasked a spy bringing him closer to Kodai and the others. However, he also secretly interfered with the Yamato’s Wave Motion engine.

Karzet (Voiced by: Takashi Onozuka (Japanese))

Karzet is a Garmillan officer rescued by the Yamato during the evacuation from the Eleventh Planet.

Abelt Dessler (Voiced by: Koichi Yamadera (Japanese))

The supreme leader of the Great Garmillas Empire, Abelt Dessler is the captain of the Desura and hopes to greatly expand the territory and influence of the Garmillans. Abelt’s plans are disrupted after encountering the Yamato on the way back from Iscandar. His hopes for an alliance with the Iscandans were dashed and he was forced to accept defeat at the hands of the Yamato leaving him drifting in space. However, there is life in Desura yet and he returns to hassle the Yamato once again after receiving assistance from the Gatlanteans. Taking his lead from Miru, a Gatlantean officer on board the Desura as an emissary, Dessler joins the Gantlantean fleet to confront Kodai at Telezart.

Erik vam Dessler (Voiced by: Kazuhiko Inoue (Japanese))

Erik van Dessler ruled over the Garmillan nation before the establishment of its empire. An archduke, vam Dessler was a prominent aristocrat at the centre of the Dessler family and the uncle of Abelt and Matthius Dessler.

Matthius Dessler (Voiced by: Takeshi Kusao (Japanese))

Matthius Dessler is the nephew of Erik van Dessler and a military genius who is often seen as his uncle’s successor.

Adelshia Dessler (Voiced by: Shoko Ikeda (Japanese))

Adelshia Dessler is the mother of Matthius and Abelt Dessler. After the death of her husband, Adelshia poured all of her love and hope into her oldest son, Matthius, who greatly resembles his father.

Eerie (Voiced by: Shiki Aoki (Japanese))

Eerie is a strange Garmillan girl born the Eleventh Planet. Under the influence of older brother Elda, she is a big fan of the Yamato - the Earth ship which saved Garmillas. Her family was killed during the Gatlantian attack, but she was rescued by Nagakura and Saito and evacuated on the Yamato where she met and attached herself to Toko Katsuragi. She is currently living with the other Eleventh Planet refugees at the Moon Base facility.

Zwordar (Voiced by: Hideaki Tezuka (Japanese), Greg Dulcie (English))

Zwordar is the warlord currently reigning over the Gatlantean Empire. Claiming to fight in the name of love, Zwordar believes that only Gatlantis can bring the universe peace.

Sifar Sabera (Voiced by: Yuko Kaida (Japanese), Colleen Clinkenbeard (English))

Sifar Sabera is among the highest ranking officials of the Gatlantis Empire. Among the Gatlanteans she is famed as being of a different order but otherwise remains shrouded in mystery.

Goenitz (Voiced by: Hideyuki Umezu (Japanese))

Goenitz is a high ranking officer in the Gatlantis Empire and a longtime follower of Zwordar. As the commander-in-chief, he has control over the fleet and has near unrivalled power inside the empire.

Razera (Voiced by: Kouki Harasawa (Japanese))

Razera is a high ranking military officer in the Gantlean government in charge of planets occupied by the Gatlantis regime. Among the top brass, Razera is a crafty politician with a bureaucratic manner.

Admiral Valsey (Voiced by: Tomomichi Nishimura (Japanese))

Admiral Valsey is the overall commander of the seventh fleet and is a prideful military officer.

Gaireign (Voiced by: Hidekatsu Shibata (Japanese))

A first glance Gaireign looks like an old man but it’s difficult to make out his expression because of his custom goggles. He flies about the universe gathering information and reports back to Zwordar.

Cosmodart Nazca (Voiced by: Tomoya Kawai (Japanese))

Cosmodart Nazca is a Gatlantean soldier attached to the eight fleet and serving under Maser. Along with Maser he took off to pursue the Yamato after the defeat and was later punished for his insubordination by Dessler.

Admiral Maser (Voiced by: Shigeo Kiyama (Japanese))

Admiral Meser is the cool and collected commander of the eighth fleet. When all of his ships were disabled by the Yamato’s Wave Motion Guns during the battle for the Eleventh Planet he was consumed by resentment for the humiliating defeat. For this reason, he defied his orders and pursued the Yamato and was later condemned as a traitor.

Zantz Zurvival (Voiced by: Yusaku Yara (Japanese))

Zantz Zurvival is a Gatlantean infantry soldier stationed on Telezart. He has intense fighting spirit and is a veteran officer alongside comrade in arms Gorland.

Admiral Gorland (Voiced by: Kazuhiro Yamaji (Japanese))

Admiral Gorland is the Gatlantean commander in charge of the defence forces on Telezart. He is a brave leader who prizes service to the nation above all.

Nor (Voiced by: Takahiro Hikami (Japanese))

Nor is the offspring of Gorland. As a member of Gantlantean society, he determined not to shame the “Gorland” name but also longs for the recognition of his father.

Mir (Voiced by: Kouki Uchiyama (Japanese))

Mir is a Gantlantean officer sent to oversee actions aboard the Desura and is usually to be found at the side of Dessler. He has a direct link to Zwordar via the Cosmo Wave. Led astray by Dessler, he eventually betrayed his mission and is currently imprisoned aboard the Neu Desura.

Teresa (Voiced by: Sayaka Kanda (Japanese), Tia Ballard (English))

Teresa is a goddess with tremendous power who is able to send out her pleas for help across space via the Cosmo Wave.
