Alternate Title

BAKUMATSU ~恋愛幕末カレシ 外伝~

The Bakumatsu was an era in which the souls of young men burned with anxiety for their country’s future. Takasugi Shinsaku, a soldier of fortune from Choshu, sneaks aboard a government ship with his comrade Katsura Kogoro in search of a mysterious “timepiece” with the power to manipulate time that he fears the government wishes to keep for themselves. Rather than allow such power to fall into the wrong hands, Takasugi plans to destroy the artifact, but having obtained it, the artifact is quickly stolen, forcing the pair to follow the mysterious thief to the seat of government in Kyoto. However, when they arrive in the capital, they discover that the government has been overthrown and the deity Susanoo now reigns in its place. The streets of the city and the people in them are much different than Takasugi and Katsura remembered. The times may have changed but their mission hasn’t - Takasugi and Katsura resolve to reset time and save their nation from the nefarious forces trying to hijack it.

Bakumatsu: Renai Bakumatsu Kareshi is inspired by the smartphone game published by FuRyu. Though the game is romance orientated, the anime will be a sci-fi/action drama. The anime adaptation was announced at AnimeJapan in March 2018 and will premiere in October 2018. MIKOTO will sing the series’ opening theme, “Spiral Maze,” while the ending theme, “Harukanaru Tabi,” will be sung by Eri Sasaki.

Takasugi Shinsaku (Voiced by: Yuichi Nakamura)

A revolutionary from Choshu, Takasugi Shinsaku is a reckless young man willing to brave any danger if it’s in the name of a cause he believes in. He is often scolded by his comrade Katsura for his devil may care conduct. As a graduate of the Shoka Sonjuku school led by Yoshida Shoin, Takasugi still holds his teachings dear in his heart and has an extremely strong sense of duty.

Katsura Kogoro (Voiced by: Takuya Eguchi)

Katsura Kogoro is level-headed, serious, and quite the gallant hero. He often ends up playing the straight man to the dynamic Takasugi and has a tendency to get pulled into his various adventures. Even so, more than anyone else he and Takasugi have a relationship of absolute trust.

Sakamoto Ryoma (Voiced by: Shinichiro Miki)

Sakamoto Ryoma is well mannered and good at getting close to people but is also good at thinking outside of the box when it comes to fulfilling his aims. An extremely quick thinker, Sakamoto has excellent business sense and adaptability as he wanders across Japan.

Okada Izo (Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka)

Okada Izo is the head of Sakamoto’s guard and often works alongside him. With his slender frame, Okada is able to undertake all kinds of missions and is a particularly good swordsman. He is always alert and possesses an explosive force which sets him apart from all others.

Hijikata Toshizo (Voiced by: Toshiyuki Someya)

Hijikata Toshizo is the deputy head of the Shinsengumi and true believer in the force’s chief, Kondo. A strict disciplinarian, he inspires fear in his subordinates but is actually very compassionate and worries about people in trouble. He cares more about Kondo and the Shinsengumi than anyone else.

Kondo Isami (Voiced by: Takuya Sato)

Kondo Isami is the head of the Shinsengumi and always has the well-being of his men as his top priority. In contrast to Hijikata’s austerity, Kondo is well liked for his steadfastness and does his best to bring together the rowdy men of the Shinsengumi. He is generous of spirit towards friends, extremely insightful, and prepared for whatever happens.

Okita Soji (Voiced by: Tsubasa Yonaga)

Okita Soji is a member of the first unit of the Shinsengumi. His ubiquitous smile masks a battle-crazed heart. He is uncompromising, and while able to complete his missions with natural good sense, he is prepared to unleash his raw emotions on the things which get in the way of his target and can sometimes seem like an unbalanced child.

Saito Hajime (Voiced by: Keita Tada)

Saito Hajime is the commander of the third unit of the Shinsengumi. He is as good a swordsman as Okita and is often placed in charge of purges and assassinations. He is often paired with Okita for collaborative missions and has sworn his loyalty to Kondo but sometimes exposes the truth by speaking ill of him.

Tokugawa Yoshinobu (Voiced by: Tatsuhisa Suzuki)

Tokugawa Yoshinobu is the 15th Tokugawa Shogun. He has a tendency to put himself to one side while worrying about everything going on around him and also excels at martial arts. Because of a certain incident, he is very fond of Yamazaki.

Yamazaki Susumu (Voiced by: Taku Yashiro)

Yamazaki Susumu is a spy working for the Shinsengumi. He has sworn his loyalty to Tokugawa Yoshinobu and is willing to risk his life to protect him. He is fundamentally mild-mannered but is able to stand up to even Kondo where Yoshinobu is concerned. He has a light build and is also extraordinarily nimble.
