Synopsis

Kaito Jin is a high school student who grew up in Tokyo and transfers to a new school in Nagoya where he meets a high school girl named Monaka Yatogame who speaks in a thick accent. With her cat-like appearance and blatant Nagoya dialect, she doesn't seem to take to him at all. This popular local comedy aims to improve the status of Nagoya by observing the cute Monaka-chan!

Background

Yatogame-chan Kansatsu Nikki is a four-panel manga series written and illustrated by Masaki Ando that has been serialized in Ichijinsha’s Monthly Comic Rex since May 2016. The ninth and latest volume of the collected tankobon manga was released in October 2020.

The first season of the anime adaptation aired from April to June 2019, while the second season aired from January to March 2020. Almost all of the main characters are voiced by voice actors who are from the same prefecture is the character they play. The anime was created in part to help vitalize the Nagoya area, and as promotion, local idol groups TEAM SHACHI, OS☆U, and dela from Aichi Prefecture were active as publicity ambassadors for the anime. Also, commercials from local companies in the Tokai area are played after each episode.

The third season of the anime adaptation, titled Yatogame-chan Kansatsu Nikki 3 Satsume, was announced in September 2020. It is once again being animated by Saetta with cooperation from Creators in Pack and LEVELS and sees returning staff including Hisayoshi Hirasawa (Netsuzou Trap -NTR-, Ojisan to Marshmallow, Rail Romanesque) as chief director, WORDS in STEREO (Jingai-san no Yome, Love is Like a Cocktail, Love To-LIE-Angle) handling series composition, Takao Yagi (Cap Kakumei Bottleman, Linebarrels of Iron, Rozen Maiden) writing the script, Satsuki Hayasaka (High School DxD Hero, Hinako Note, Princess Connect! Re:Dive) handling character designs, and Ryudai Abe (18if, The Misfit of Demon King Academy, Tenka Hyakken) composing the music. It premiered on Jan. 10, 2021 on TV Aichi and BS11 and is available to stream online through Crunchyroll.

Characters

Monaka Yatogame (Voiced by: Haruka Tomatsu)
The heroine of the series. She loves her hometown of Nagoya and has a grudge against Tokyoites. She has a thick accent. Her favorite subject is PE and her weakest is match. She doesn’t do well with people she doesn’t know. Her hobby is walking. She is a member of the photography club.

Kaito Jin (Voiced by: Mitsuhiro Ichiki)
The protagonist of the series. He has no delicacy and doesn’t know what’s good about his hometown. He was born and raised in Tokyo but moves to Aichi at the beginning of the story. He is forced by Mai to join the photography club.

Mai Tadakusa (Voiced by: Yuki Wakai)
She reluctantly loves her hometown and has a fierce devotion to what she likes. Her hobby is watching anime. She has a large chest and is taller than the others. Her best subject is modern literature and her weakest is PE.

Yanna Sasatsu (Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu)
She has a moderate love for her hometown and a fickle personality. Her hobby is solo karaoke. She has red twintails and a hair clip that looks like a lobster head. She is the head of the photography club and is classmates with Jin. Her best subject is history and her weakest is morning assembly. She doesn’t like getting up early and has a habit of suddenly falling asleep when she gets too excited. She often also sleeps in the club room.

Lala Shonai (Voiced by: Yoshino Nanjo)
She loves her hometown but is pessimistic. Her hobby is driving.

Toshika Jin (Voiced by: Hisako Tojo)
She likes her hometown more than Nagoya but she adapts rather flexibly. Her hobby is collecting security devices.

Rin Jandara (Voiced by: Eriko Matsui)
She loves her hometown but has a strict definition of what her hometown is. Her hobby is reading.

Teppei (Voiced by: Kenji Akabane)
He doesn’t really know what’s in his hometown. His hobby is watching sports.

Shiharu Itemae (Voiced by: Honoka Kuroki)
Born in Osaka. She is a third-year junior high student. She is very proud of her hometown but isn’t very aware of it. Her hobby is watching comedy.

Nanaho Koshiyasu (Voiced by: Ayasa Ito)
Born in Kyoto. She is a third-year junior high student. She thinks it’s lowbrow to fight over hometown matters. Her hobby is visiting temples.
