Synopsis

Yuri Honjo is a high school student who has found herself in a strange world called the Realm that consists of countless skyscrapers connected by suspension bridges, but things only get weirder from there. After witnessing a masked figure brutally kill a man with an axe, she realizes that it’s kill or be killed. Determined to survive and escape this nightmarish hellscape, will she be able to find a way out or is her only escape death?

Background

High-Rise Invasion is a survival horror manga series written by Tsuina Miura and illustrated by Takahiro Oba that was serialized on DeNA's Manga Box app from December 2013 to March 2019 and has been compiled and released as 21 tankobon volumes by Kodansha. The sequel manga, High-Rise Invasion Arrive, has also been serialized on Kodansha's Magazine Pocket website since July 2019 and has been published in five tankobon volumes as of November 2020.

An ONA (original net animation) adaptation was announced at the Netflix Anime Festival in October 2020. The anime is being produced by Zero-G and features Masahiro Takata as director and sound director with Touko Machida handling series composition, Youichi Ueda handling character designs and is also the chief animation director together with Yuji Ushijima, and Yusuke Isouchi, Junki Taniguchi credited as art director, and tatsuo and Youichi Sakai who are handling the music. The opening theme song is "HON-NO” by idol group EMPiRE, and the ending theme song is “Watashi no Na wa Blue” by rock band Have a Nice Day!. The anime will premiere on Netflix on Feb. 25, 2021.

Characters

Yuri Honjo (Voiced by: Haruka Shiraishi)
Yuri is a 16-year-old high school student and the protagonist of the story. Her weapon of choice is an automatic pistol. She has been influenced by her knowledgeable older brother Rika since a young age and is an extreme brocon. She tries to survive in the Realm by making use of the knowledge she gained from him.

Kuon Shinzaki (Voiced by: Akira Sekine)
Kuon is a 16-year-old naive girl who has lived a sheltered life and is ignorant of the world around her. Immediately after being brought to the Realm she gains enough tremendous power to be able to control the fate of the world. However, she isn’t aware of this fact.

Rika Honjo (Voiced by: Junya Enoki)
Rika is a third-year high school student and Yuri’s older brother. He has a complex about his name and admits to having a warped personality. He is a leader who formed a team with several friends and works to unravel the mysteries of the Realm in which he finds himself. His weapon of choice is a large hammer.

Mayuko Nise (Voiced by: Shiki Aoki)
Mayuko is a 16-year-old high school student who is shorter than Yuri and nicknamed “Nise-chan” by her. In her original world, she was neglected by those around her and has now become ruthless in order to survive in the Realm. She is initially hostile towards Yuri but begins to work with her after Yuri saves her life. For the kindness that Yuri has shown her, she is determined to protect her even at the cost of her own life. Her weapon of choice is a combat knife.

Sniper Mask (Voiced by: Yuichiro Umehara)
Sniper Mask is a Mask under the control of Command who is able to regain a bit of his self-awareness after his mask is cracked in a battle with Yuri. In addition to trying to solve the mysteries of the Realm, he is also trying to recover his memories from before he became a Mask. His weapon of choice is a sniper rifle which he shoots with deadly accuracy, being able to shoot through the ropes of suspension bridges and shoot down enemy bullets in mid-air.

Ein (Voiced by: Chika Anzai)
Ein is a small Mask girl under Kauzma’s control. Though physically weak, she is proficient with a sword.

Mamoru Aikawa (Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama)
Mamoru is a 26-year-old high school teacher and the fourth “godlike” character in the series. He was unjustly killed by an administrator. He believes strongly in eugenics, which was triggered by misfortunes that occurred in his family when he was in elementary school, and he aims to create an ideal reality within the Realm. He is constantly gathering information and building his forces in anticipation of facing off against another “godlike” like himself.

Kazuma Aohara (Voiced by: Koji Yusa)
Kazuma is a surgeon in his 20s. He is the first “godlike” character Yuri meets after joining up with Mayuko. He is able to control Masks and is only concerned about his own safety.

Shinji Okihara (Voiced by: Megumi Ogata)
Shinji is a young boy who becomes friends with Rika after meeting him in the Realm. Though he has confidence in his abilities with a gun, he relies on Rika due to his timid personality.

Dealer Mask (Voiced by: Shizuka Ito)
Dealer Mask is a mysterious 24-years-old female who wears a special mask called the Mask of Anger. She is in charge of patrols and guards the elevator room from outsiders. Her weapon of choice is a M4A1 rifle but she also possesses fighting skills and moves quicker than any other Mask. She keeps an eye on Rika, Yuri, and the others from a distance.

Yayoi Kusakabe (Voiced by: Yoko Hikasa)
Yayoi is a powerful Mask under the control of Mamoru. Though she is self-aware, she has an extremely sadistic side. She is a self-proclaimed 18 year old and is loyal to Mamoru.
