Synopsis

--How beautiful freedom is, and how harsh--
Fifteen children escaped from Grace Field House. What awaits them as they abandon their false paradise and seek freedom are plants and animals they’ve never seen before, and a “demon” that chases them… The outside world is beautiful but harsh. However, the children will not give up. Guided by a message from Minerva and a pen left by Norman, they aim for tomorrow with determination to fulfill their promise to meet back up with the “family” they left behind.

Background

The Promised Neverland began as a manga written by Kaiu Shirai and illustrated by Posuka Demizu that was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from August 2016 to June 2020 as has been published as 20 collected tankobon volumes. The manga won the Best Shonen Manga award at the 63rd Shogakukan Manga Awards in January 2018 as was nominated for both the 11th Manga Taisho awards and 22nd Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. Viz Media is also publishing the manga in English and serializing it in its digital English edition of Shonen Jump. A spin-off manga titled Oyakusoku no Neverland by Shuhei Miyazaki was published on the Shonen Jump+ from January to March 2019. The series has also been adapted into four light novels and a live-action film with a live-action drama also in the works.

The second season of the anime adaptation was announced in March 2019. The anime is once again being produced by CloverWorks and features Mamoru Kanbe returning as director with Kaiu Shirai and Toshiya Ono handling series composition, Kazuaki Shimada credited as character designer and chief animation director, and Takahiro Obata composing the music. The opening theme song is "Identity" by Kiro Akiyama, and the ending theme song is "Maho" by Myuk. The anime was originally scheduled to premiere in October 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It premiered on Jan. 7, 2021 during Fuij TV’s Noitamina programming block
