Synopsis

The Akatsuki Special Zone of Tokyo - a lawless zone abandoned by the government. The only ones who can protect the zone are Scards, people with tattoos that have the sealed powers of the gods. Helios, Artemis, and the Public Security Special Service are each faced with a variety of difficulties each day and fight to overcome them. The bonds that they form are not ones of hatred or anger but of trust. This is the story of how they become friends and learn to trust each other.

Background

Project Scard: Scar on the Praeter is an original media mix project by Frontier Works that spans drama CDs, character songs, internet radio shows, and a TV anime. The anime was announced by Frontier Works in September 2020. It is being produced by GoHands and features Shingo Suzuki as director and character designer, Tamazo Yanagi as scriptwriter, Keiji Tani and Makoto Furuta as chief animation directors, Hiroshi Okubo as mechanical designer, and Conisch and GOON TRAX composing the music. The anime premiered on Jan. 8, 2021 on MBS, TBS, and BS-TBS. It is available to stream online through Funimation (North America, the British Isles), Wakanim (Europe), and AnimeLab (Australia, New Zealand).

Characters

Yamato Kai (Voiced by: Arthur Lounsbery)
A 20 year old who lives with his brother-in-law Minato in “B1,” an area of the Akatsuki Special Zone where illegal residents gather. He doesn’t talk much and seems cold at first glance, but he has a strong sense of justice and is quick to offer his help when it’s in need. He was saved four years ago during the Akatsuki Rebellion by Eiji and has looked up to him ever since.

Eiji Arashiba (Voiced by: Atsushi Kousaka)
The 24-year-old leader of Helios, the troubleshooters of the Akatsuki Special Zone. He is the “Hero of Akatsuki” who helped fight to protect the zone during the Akatsuki Rebellion four years ago. He is aloof but protective of his friends. He manages the book cafe Titan but leaves the work to his younger brother, Kazuma.

Kagami Sakishima (Voiced by: Junya Enoki)
A 23-year-old Scard who is close friends with Eiji and a member of Helios. He is knowledgeable about tattoos, medicine, and witchcraft. He isn’t very good at fighting so he instead plays a supportive role. At first glance, he appears to be soft-spoken and kind. He is a former sergeant of Sakishima Holdings, which was originally supposed to oversee the Akatsuki Special Zone.

Kazuma Arashiba (Voiced by: Shoya Chiba)
Eiji’s 18-year-old brother-in-law who has a strong admiration of him. He sometimes gets emotional when he gets angry. He manages the book cafe Titan on behalf of Eiji. He is a Scard and member of team Helios.

Hokuto Kurama (Voiced by: Katsumi Fukuhara)
The 23-year-old leader of Dusk, a criminal group with a strong presence in the Kanto region. He is dangerous and willing to use any cowardly trick for money, even killing his friends for the sake of his ambition. He has set his sights on Helios in order to establish his position in the Akatsuki Special Zone.

Hræsvelgr Sakiyo (Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda)
The owner of the Hræsvelgr tattoo until three years ago. He fought alongside Azusa during the Akatsuki Rebellion. He is currently in charge of the orphanage where Ran and Jin grew up. He has a wide information network.

Jin Karasue (Voiced by: Sho Nogami)
A 21-year-old Scard and member of Artemis. He is a managing director at Artemis Finance along with Ran who is loyal to Azusa but is a pain in the ass to everyone else. He loves watching anime and often quotes them.

Ran Washimine (Voiced by: Takeaki Masuyama)
A 21-year-old Scard and member of Artemis. He is a managing director at Artemis Finance, a large corporation within the Akatsuki Special Zone. He is loyal to the company’s leader, Azusa. He is confident and hardworking but also takes care of his personal life.

Kouga Tatsuma (Voiced by: Taku Yashiro)
A 36-year-old police officer with the Public Safety Special Service who monitors Scards. He is also a Scard himself. Others see him as good-natured, but in reality there is no length he won’t go to to reach his goal. He gives advice to his colleague Itsuki, but it’s never taken seriously.

Itsuki Torataka (Voiced by: Tasuku Hatanaka)
A 17-year-old police officer with the Public Safety Special Service who monitors Scards. He is also a Scard himself. He is highly skilled in combat and is able to manipulate tattoos. He gets fed up with Kouga’s overly familiar attitude.

Morrigan Sakiyo (Voiced by: Yoji Ueda)
The owner of the Morrigan tattoo until three years ago. He fought alongside Azusa during the Akatsuki Rebellion. He wants to help Azusa due to her shortened lifespan.

Minato Kai (Voiced by: Yoshitaka Yamaya)
Yamato’s 14-year-old brother-in-law. He lost his parents four years ago during the Akatsuki Rebellion. He met Yamato at that time and they became siblings. He lives with Yamato and is in charge of the household chores. He is cheerful and straightforward but is also a bit of an airhead. He has a lot of respect for Yamato and is conflicted about not being able to help him.

Banri Mikado (Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama)
A 24-year-old Scard and one of the original members of Helios along with Eiji and Kagami. He seems to currently be on a journey. He is free-spirited and likes to have fun. Although he often jokes around, he is conscientious of those around him and is the emotional support of Helios.

Azusa Yuki (Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya)
A 25-year-old Scard and the leader of Artemis. She is invincible at night due to her ability to transform moonlight into anything, but she is weak during the day. She also has a short lifespan. She has a feminine appearance and a refreshingly composed personality.
