Synopsis

The life of a slacker high school girl is suddenly turned upside down when she and several other students in her class are killed in a freak explosion. However, what should be the end is just the beginning as she awakes in a strange fantasy world to find that she has been reincarnated as a lowly spider! How will this tiny spider learn to survive in this harsh world filled with dangerous dungeons and even more dangerous monsters that are all trying to kill her?

Background

So I'm a Spider, So What? is an isekai light novel series written by Okina Baba and illustrated by Tsukasa Kiryu that began being published on the user-generated content site Shosetsuka ni Naro in May 2015 as a web novel. The series was later picked up by Fujimi Shobo who began publishing the light novel in December 2015. The series is licensed for English release by Yen Press. A spin-off titled So I’m a Spider, So What? EX began being published in December 2020.

A manga adaptation written by Asahiro Kakashi began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten's Young Ace Up manga website in December 2015. A spin-off manga titled So I’m a Spider, So What? Daily Life of the Four Spider Sisters written by Gratin Tori began serialization on the Young Ace Up website in July 2019.

An anime adaptation was announced with the release of the fifth volume of the collected manga in July 2018. It is being produced by studio Millepensee and features Shin Itagaki as director with Okina Baba and Yuichiro Momose as the head writers, Kii Tanaka as the character designer, Masahiko Suzuki, Ryo Hirata, and Hiromi Kimura as the monster designers, Tomohiro Yoshida as chief animator, and Shuji Katayama who is handling the music. The opening theme song is "Keep Weaving Your Spider Way" by Riko Azuna, and the ending theme song is "Ganbare! Kumoko-san no Theme" by Aoi Yuki. The anime was originally scheduled to premiere in 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, it premiered on Jan. 8, 2021 on Tokyo MX, AT-X, BS11, and other channels. It will run for two consecutive cours, each of which will be available to stream overseas through Crunchyroll.

Characters

I (Voiced by: Aoi Yuki)
The protagonist of the series, she is an unpopular high school girl who is reincarnated as a spider. In her past life she was a shut-in who spent her time playing video games, but now she fights for survival as a lowly spider using her agility, spiderwebs, and poison fangs to get the upper hand against enemies more powerful than herself.

Shun / Shunsuke Yamada / Schlain Zagan Analeit (Voiced by: Shun Horie)
Shun is the fourth prince of the Kingdom of Analeit. In his previous life, his name was Shunsuke Yamada and he was an unremarkable and ordinary student, qualities which he has retained since being reincarnated. He deeply admired his older brother Julius and strives every day to become as strong as him.

Katia / Kanata Oshima / Karnatia Seri Anabald (Voiced by: Nao Toyama)
Katia is the beautiful daughter of Duke Anabald. In her previous life, she was a boy named Kanata Oshima. She has been friends with Shun since their previous lives and is a prodigy who is able to match his abilities. She normally speaks in an elegant, refined manner, but takes on a male tone when talking with others who have reincarnated.

Hugo Baint Renxandt / Natsume Kengo (Voiced by: Kaito Ishikawa)
Hugo is the crown prince of the Renxandt Empire. In his previous life, he was Natsume Kengo and was the leader of his class. He is impressively skilled but has a habit of exaggerating his own abilities that detracts from them. He sees Shun as his rival.

Sue / Suresia (Voiced by: Yui Ogura)
Sue is the second princess of the Kingdom of Analeit. She is Shun’s half-sister who was born to a different mother but her abilities rival his own. She is a brocon who is obsessed with Shun and she acts openly hostile to any woman who tries to get close to him.

Fei / Feirune (Voiced by: Eri Kitamura)
Fei is Shun’s pet Earth Wyrm. In her past life she was a girl named Mirei Shinohara but was reincarnated as a monster instead of a human. Her stats as a monster increase at a fast rate and she has high situational awareness. Though a bully in her past life, she now has a cheerful and open personality, though her old ways sometimes show through in her behaviors.

Filimøs Harrifenas (Voiced by: Kaya Okuno)
Filimøs was the students’ homeroom teacher Kanami Okazaki in her past life, whom they affectionately called “Oka-chan.” She is reincarnated as a young elf and begins attending school with Shun and the others as their classmate. Though a caring teacher, she seems to have many secrets.

Yuri / Yurin Ullen (Voiced by: Aimi Tanaka)
Yuri is a candidate for sainthood in the Holy Kingdom of Alleius. In her previous life, her name was Yuika Hasabe. Though very serious and well-mannered, she often doesn’t pay attention to what’s going on around her. She reincarnates as a girl who was abandoned by her parents and raised by the church and becomes a fanatical believer in the Word of God religion.

Julius Zagan Analeit (Voiced by: Junya Enoki)
Julius is the second prince of the Kingdom of Analeit. He is Sue’s older half-brother and is humanity’s strongest hero. Though he is a master at both swordfighting and magic and has received many accolades in battle, he remains virtuous and humble. He is a true hero who devotes himself to fighting to bring peace to the world.
