Synopsis
Five years ago, a mysterious disaster decimated cities around the globe. The world is still in turmoil but is slowly recovering. In this world exist girls fascinated by the world of theater, which uses the “Theatrical Material System” to create 3D holograms that light up the stage. Seria Morino is one such girl who receives an invitation from a mysterious woman to join a small stage troupe called Alice in Theater. The curtain is about to open as Seria and girls like her take to the shining stage to bring happiness back to the world.
Background
Gekidol is a mixed media project by Hoods Entertainment featuring original character designs by Asami Sekiya. A manga adaptation by Sekiya titled Gekidol Alive began serialization in Kadokawa’s Dengeki Maou magazine in February 2017. A stage play titled Gekidol the Stage is also in the works and is scheduled to run from March 3-7, 2021 at the Théâtre de Saint-Maur in Tokyo.
The anime adaptation is being produced by Hoods Entertainment and features Shigeru Ueda as director with Keiichiro Ochi as chief writer, Kiyoshi Tateishi as character designer and chief animation director, Takuya Imakado as mechanical designer, and Prhythm/epx as music composer with Hiroyuki Kozu handling the arrangement. The series’ opening theme song is “Gekidol” by Seria Morino, Airi Kagami, Mayuri Nakamura, Akari Asagi, Manami Fujita, and Kazuharu Yamamoto, and the ending theme song is “Kizuna” by Airi Kagami. The anime premiered on Jan. 5, 2021 on AT-X and is available to stream overseas through Funimation (North America and British Isles), AnimeLab (Australia and New Zealand), and Wakanim (France, Russia, Germany, and Scandinavia).
Characters
Seria Morino (Voiced by: Hikaru Akao)
Seria began to yearn for being on stage after seeing Izumi’s performance at the Super Material Theater. She is able to completely copy the performance style and quirks of others to the point of acting just like them. She has a stuffed animal named Alice that she cherishes.
Mayuri Nakamura (Voiced by: Amina Sato)
Mayuri is a member of the Alice in Theater troupe. Because of helping out at her family’s coffee shop, she is known by the other members as being habitually late. She is accustomed to serving customers and handles her fans with ease.
Manami Fujita (Voiced by: Asami Takano)
Manami has been a member of the Alice in Theater troupe since its inception. Her nickname is “Rabumin.” She is also active as an indie idol and mainly performs at free events. She is always excited and has the latest gossip.
Kazuharu Yamamoto (Voiced by: Aya Akiyoshi)
Kazuharu is a member of the Alice in Theater troupe who is called “Air” by the others because he has so little presence. He doesn’t talk much and often doesn’t have much to say. Akira tends to act as his interpreter.
Izumi Hinazaki (Voiced by: Ayaka Suwa)
Izumi is originally from the Alice in Theater troupe but left to join the Super Material Theater. She is the reason Airi joins Alice in Theater.
Airi Kagami (Voiced by: Chihira Mochida)
Airi is a member of the Alice in Theater troupe. She is cheerful and unafraid, and she takes care of Seria as her senpai on stage. She used to be partners with Izumi.
Kaworu Sakakibara (Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa)
Kaworu is the director of Alice in Theater and also an actress. Though sloppy, she has a keen eye for the stage. She recruits Seria to join Alice in Theater and takes an active part in helping her grow. She seems to have had a falling out with Hirokazu.
Hirokazu Takezaki (Voiced by: Kousuke Toriumi)
Hirokazu is the producer of the Super Material Theater. His goal is to create the ultimate entertainment. For some reason, he sees Alice in Theater as a rival.
Doll (Voiced by: M.A.O)
Doll is an Actidol - a piece of stage equipment created by the Theatrical Material System. She is emotionless and often serves as a rehearsal partner. Though she doesn’t have an official name, she is called Alice by Seria
Akira Asagi (Voiced by: Nozomi Yamamoto)
Akira has been a member of Alice in Theater troupe since its inception. She has a calm tomboyish attitude and is kind to all the girls, though she can be a bit rude at times and likes to tease Seria by calling her “Princess.” She is not fond of fluttery costumes and skirts.
Makoto Higuchi (Voiced by: Sarara Yashima)
Makoto is classmates with Seria. She once auditioned for the Super Material Theater. Although a bit high strung, she is actually very caring and kind. She is always concerned with Seria’s well-being.
Tomoko Hinata (Voiced by: Kaori Mizuhashi)
