Synopsis
The modern world has enjoyed an era of relative peace, but this wasn’t always the case. Three years ago, the world was attacked by extradimensional enemies called Netherbeasts, and humanity’s military might was powerless against them. When it looked like all hope was lost, fairies from the spirit world granted magical powers to a few human girls, and with those powers they stopped the Netherbeast onslaught. One of these teenage schoolgirls, and leader of the Magical Five, was Asuka Otori.
Since that time, Asuka has happily left the battlefield to live an ordinary civilian life. But just when she thinks she’s out of the game, circumstances pull her back in. Three years after the last great Netherbeast battle, war has changed. A handful of magical girls are now being hired by international crime syndicates in a war for money and power. These magical girls are employing black ops and terrorist tactics to achieve their endgame, and Asuka Otori is the world’s best chance to bring peace and order to it once again.
Background
Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka began as a manga series published in 2015 written by Makoto Fukami and illustrated by Seigo Tokiya. The complete work went on to be translated and published for release in North America in 2018. Animation studio Liden Films is handling the anime adaptation.
Characters
Asuka Otori / Magical Girl Rapture Asuka (Voiced by: Aya Suzaki)
Asuka Otori is currently 16-17 years old. Her codename is Rapture. She acquired magical girl powers from a fairy of the Spirit World. These powers include enhanced superhuman physical capabilities and magic skills. She specializes in dual-wielding hand blades used in melee combat.
Kurumi Mugen / Magical Girl War Nurse Kurumi (Voiced by: Akira Sekine)
Kurumi is 16-17 years old. Like Asuka, she was a member of the Magical Five and imbued with powers by fairies. While you would think someone with the codename War Nurse would be more a of a healer, her magical powers tend to be for attack with some relation to biochemical warfare.
Mia Cyrus / Magical Girl Just Cause Mia (Voiced by: Eriko Matsui)
Mia is the same age as Asuka and Kurumi. She is a former member of the Magical Five. Her codename is Just Cause. She has the ability to see through walls or become invisible to non-powered humans.
Chisato Yonamine (Voiced by: Ayana Taketatsu)
Chisato is one the series’ main antagonists. She is a mysterious combatant with great power and physical ability. She utilizes a sniper rifle and metallic armor on her left arm. She has a prosthetic right leg. She’s also an expert at using a whip.
