Alternate Title

2015 - mysterious flying creatures known as Zai suddenly appear over central Asia. Endowed with fighting power that vastly outperforms any existing aircraft, nations soon find themselves taking heavy damage. In order to fight back, humanity creates fighter aircraft called “Daughters” as well as automatic fighting machines called “Anima,” which take the form of human girls.

Two years later, a fleet heading for Japan is attacked by Zai off the coast of Shanghai. During his escape to a lifeboat, Kei Narutani witnesses a fighter-like aircraft shooting down Zai. However, the aircraft is shot down and crashes into the sea nearby. Driven by an urge to help save the pilot who saved him, Kei leaps into the sea and succeeds in reaching the aircraft. But this particular aircraft is like none he has ever seen, and when he opens the cockpit expecting to see a pilot he is instead greeted by a delicate and petite girl...

Girly Air Force began as a light novel series written by Koji Natsumi and illustrated by Asagi Tosaka that has been published under ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Bunko imprint since 2014. As of November 2018, there are nine volumes in print.

The series has also received a manga adaptation by Takahiro Seguchi that began serialization in the December 2018 issue of Kadokawa Shoten’s Monthly Shonen Ace.

An anime adaptation of the series was announced in June 2018. Produced by Satelight, the anime is being directed by Katsumi Ono with Shingo Nagai handling series composition, Toru Imanishi updating Asagi Tosaka’s original character designs for animation and also acting as the chief animation director, Hiroyuki Taiga handling mechanical designs and combat, and I’ve Sound creating the music. The anime’s opening theme song is "Break the Blue” by Run Girls, Run!, while the ending theme song is "Colorful Wing" performed by Yuka Morishima, Hitomi Owada, and Shiori Izawa as their respective characters. The anime will premiere in Japan on Jan. 10, 2019 and will air on AT-X, Tokyo MX, BS11, Sun TV, and AbemaTV.
